Ten Homilies on the First Epistle of John

4.

And by what do we know that we love the sons of God? By this, "that we love God, and do His commandments." We sigh here, by reason of the hardness of doing the commandments of God. Hear what follows. O man, at what toilest thou in loving? In loving avarice. With toil is that loved which thou lovest: there is no toil in loving God. Avarice will enjoin thee labors, perils, sore hardships and tribulations; and thou wilt do its bidding. To what end? That thou mayest have that with which thou shalt fill thy chest, and lose thy peace of mind. Thou didst feel thyself haply more secure before thou hadst it, than since thou didst begin to have. See what avarice has enjoined thee. Thou hast filled thine house, and art in dread of robbers; hast gotten gold, lost thy sleep. See what avarice has enjoined thee. Do, and thou didst. What does God enjoin thee! Love me. Thou lovest gold, thou wilt seek gold, and perchance not find it: whoso seeks me, I am with him. Thou wilt love honor, and perchance not attain unto it: who ever loved me, and did not attain? God saith to thee, thou wouldest make thee a patron, or a powerful friend: thou seekest a way to his favor by means of another inferior. Love me, saith God to thee: favor with me is not had by making interest with some other: thy love itself makes me present to thee. What sweeter than this love, brethren? It is not without reason that ye heard just now in the Psalm, "The unrighteous told me of delights, ¹ but not as is Thy law, O Lord." ² What is the Law of God? The commandment of God. What is the commandment of God? That "new commandment," which is called new because it maketh new: "A new commandment give I unto you, that ye love one another." ³ Hear because this is the law of God. The apostle saith, "Bear ye one another's burdens, and so shall ye fulfill the law of Christ." ⁴ This, even this, is the consummation of all our works; Love. In it is the end: for this we run: to it we run; when we are come to it, we shall rest.

Comment savons-nous que nous aimons les enfants de Dieu? « Parce que nous aimons Dieu, et que nous observons ses commandements ». La difficulté d'accomplir les préceptes divins nous arrache des soupirs. Ecoute ce qui suit. O homme, quand éprouves-tu tant de peine en aimant? Quand tu aimes l'avarice. On souffre à aimer ce que tu aimes; à aimer Dieu, jamais. L'avarice te condamnera à des peines, à des périls, à des brisements de corps et d'âme, à des tribulations, et tu subiras ses exigences. Dans quel but? Pour avoir de quoi remplir ton aire et perdre ta tranquillité. Avant de posséder tu étais peut-être plus tranquille que depuis le moment où tu as commencé à être riche. Voilà ce qu'a exigé de toi l'avarice; tu as rempli ta maison, mais la crainte des voleurs te fait trembler; tu as amassé de l'or, mais tu as perdu le sommeil. Voilà ce que t'a commandé l'avarice. Fais, a-t-elle dit, cela, et tu as fait. Qu'est-ce que Dieu te commande? Aime-moi. Si tu aimes l'or, tu en chercheras, et peut-être n'en trouveras-tu pas; quiconque me cherche, je suis avec lui. Tu aimes les honneurs, et peut-être n'y parviendras-tu pas ; quel est celui qui m'a aimé sans pouvoir arriver jusqu'à moi ? Dieu le dit : Pour te procurer un protecteur, ou te faire un ami puissant, tu as recours à un autre qui est moins élevé. Aime-moi, te dit Dieu ; pas n'est besoin de recourir à un autre pour arriver jusqu'à moi ; l'amour te maintient sans cesse en ma présence. Y a-t-il rien de plus doux que cette charité? Ah, mes frères, ce n'est pas sans raison que le Psalmiste vous disait tout à l'heure : « Les impies m'ont raconté leurs fables, mais elles ne sont pas, Seigneur, comme votre loi¹ ». Quelle est la loi de Dieu? Son commandement. Quel est son commandement? C'est ce commandement nouveau que le Christ appelle de ce nom, parce qu'il établit d'autres devoirs. « Je vous donne un commandement nouveau, c'est de vous aimer les uns les autres² ». Ecoute attentivement; voilà bien la loi de Dieu, car l'Apôtre dit : « Portez les fardeaux les uns des autres, et vous accomplirez ainsi la loi de Jésus-Christ³ ». La charité est donc la suprême perfection de toutes nos oeuvres. Là est le but, c'est pour cela que nous marchons; c'est vers elle que nous dirigeons notre course, et lorsque nous serons parvenus jusqu'à elle, nous nous reposerons.
