10.

But in order that we fall not away from Continence, we ought to watch specially against those snares of the suggestions of the devil, that we presume not of our own strength. For, "Cursed is every one that setteth his hope in man." ¹ And who is he, but man? We cannot therefore truly say that he setteth not his hope in man, who setteth it in himself. For this also, to "live after man," what is it but to "live after the flesh?" Whoso therefore is tempted by such a suggestion, let him hear, and, if he have any Christian feeling, let him tremble. Let him hear, I say, "If ye shall live after the flesh, ye shall die."

Voulons-nous conserver la continence, ayons toujours l'oeil attentif aux embûches que nous dressent les suggestions diaboliques, et gardons-nous de trop présumer de nos propres forces. « Maudit soit, en effet, celui qui place dans l'homme son espérance¹ ». Et cet imprudent, quel est-il, si ce n'est l'homme lui-même? Comment donc échappera à cette malédiction celui qui met sa confiance en lui-même? C'est là vivre selon l'homme, et vivre ainsi n'est-ce pas vivre selon la chair ? Si donc il est tenté de céder à cette suggestion, pour peu qu'il lui reste encore de sens chrétien, pourra-t-il, sans frémir, entendre ces paroles : « Si vous vivez selon la chair, vous mourrez? »
