15.

After that the same Apostle adds, and says, "Thou art bound to a wife, seek not loosening: thou art loosed from a wife, seek not a wife." ¹ Of these two, that, which be set first, pertains unto command, against which it is not lawful to do. For it is not lawful to put away a wife, save because of fornication, ² as the Lord Himself saith in the Gospel. But that, which he added, "Thou art loosed from a wife, seek not a wife," is a sentence of counsel, not of command; therefore it is lawful to do, but it is better not to do. Lastly, he added straightway, "Both if thou shalt have taken a wife, thou hast not sinned; and, if a virgin shall have been married, she sinneth not." ³ But, after that former saying of his, "Thou art bound to a wife, seek not loosening," he added not, did he, "And if thou shalt have loosed, thou hast not sinned?" For he had already said above, "But to these, who are in marriage, I command, not I, but the Lord, that the wife depart not from her husband: but, if she shall have departed, that she remain unmarried, or be reconciled unto her own husband;" for it may come to pass that she depart, not through any fault of her own, but of her husband. Then he saith, "And let not the man put away his wife," which, nevertheless, he set down of command of the Lord: nor did he then add, And, if he shall have put her away, he sinneth not. For this is a command, not to obey which is sin: not a counsel, which if you shall be unwilling to use, you will obtain less good, not do any ill. On this account, after he had said, "Thou art loosed from a wife, seek not a wife;" because he was not giving command, in order that there be not evil done, but was giving counsel, in order that there be done what is better: straightway he added, "Both, if thou shall have taken a wife, thou hast not sinned; and, if a virgin shall have been married, she sinneth not."

CHAPITRE XV. LA VIRGINITÉ N'EST QU'UN CONSEIL ET NON UN PRÉCEPTE.

15. Le même apôtre dit encore: « Es-tu uni à une épouse, ne cherche pas une rupture; es-tu déchargé du lien conjugal, ne cherche point d'épouse ». La première de ces deux propositions est l'expression d'un précepte que l'on ne saurait violer sans crime. En effet, d'après la parole même du Sauveur, il n'est permis de se séparer d'une épouse que dans le cas de fornication¹. La seconde proposition n'est qu'un conseil et non un précepte ; on pourrait licitement contracter de nouveaux liens, mais le mieux est de s'abstenir. Le même docteur continue : « En prenant une épouse tu n'as point péché; de même, si une vierge se marie, elle ne pèche pas ». En disant un peu plus haut : « Si tu es dans le mariage, ne cherche pas à le dissoudre », l'Apôtre a-t-il ajouté : Et si vous brisez cette union, vous ne péchez pas? Le pouvait-il, après des paroles comme celles-ci : « A ceux qui sont mariés, j'ordonne, non pas moi mais le Seigneur, de ne pas se séparer; si la femme se sépare, qu'elle garde la continence, ou qu'elle se a réconcilie avec son mari ». Il peut arriver, en effet, que le mari et non la femme soit la cause de cette séparation. Il ajoute : « Et que le mari ne quitte point sa femme² », sans mentionner clairement que ce soit là un précepte divin, cependant il se garde bien de conclure : et s'il l'abandonne, il ne pèche pas. Car c'est là un précepte formel que l'on ne peut violer sans crime, ce n'est pas un simple conseil dont l'omission priverait d'un bien sans être un péché. Si « donc tu es délivré d'une épouse, n'en cherche pas une nouvelle » ; ce n'est pas ici un mal qu'il défend, mais un mieux qu'il conseille ; voilà pourquoi il ajoute aussitôt : « En te mariant tu n'as point péché; de même si une vierge se marie, elle ne pèche pas ».
