Mais, diras-tu, c'est le seul moyen que nous ayons de découvrir les loups cachés , couverts de la peau des brebis et faisant de secrets et terribles ravages dans le troupeau du Seigneur. — Comment donc a-t-on connu les Priscillianistes, avant l'invention de cette chasse au mensonge ? Comment a-t-on pénétré dans le repaire de leur fondateur, qui sans doute l'emportait sur eux en ruse et en habileté à se cacher ? Comment en a-t-on découvert et condamné en si grand nombre et de si importants ? Comment une foule d'autres ont-ils été, les uns corrigés entièrement, les autres corrigés à demi et reçus par compassion dans le sein de l'Eglise? car Dieu, quand il est touché de pitié, ouvre bien des chemins pour arriver à les découvrir, et deux plus sûrs que les autres : les indications de ceux qu'ils ont cherché à séduire, ou de ceux qu'ils ont déjà séduits, mais qui viennent à récipiscence et se convertissent. Et l'oeuvre est facilitée quand on détruit leur criminelle erreur, non en les trompant par des mensonges, mais en discutant au flambeau de la vérité. C'est à des écrits de ce genre que tu dois consacrer tes loisirs, puisque Dieu t'en donne la faculté. Ces utiles ouvrages, destinés à combattre des coupables folies, étant de plus en plus connus et propagés de tous les côtés par les catholiques, par les pontifes qui parlent aux peuples, par tous les hommes d'étude animés du zèle de la gloire de Dieu, deviendront comme de saints filets, qui prendront par la vérité, au lieu de pêcher par le mensonge. Pris de cette façon les hérétiques avoueront ce qu'ils ont été, et corrigeront avec bienveillance ou découvriront par compassion ceux qu'ils sauront être membres de cette secte malfaisante; ou s'ils leur en coûte trop de confesser ce qu'ils ont si longtemps caché, la main de Dieu saura leur appliquer le remède en secret et les guérir.

Against Lying

11.

"But, hidden wolves," thou wilt say, "clad in sheep's clothing, and privily and grievously wasting the Lord's flock, can we no otherwise find out." Whence then have the Priscillianists become known, ere this way of hunting for them with lies was ex-cogitated? Whence was their very author, more cunning doubtless, and therefore more covert, got at in his bed? Whence so many and so great persons made manifest and condemned, and the others innumerable partly corrected, partly as if corrected, and in the Church's compassion gathered into her fold? For many ways giveth the Lord, when He hath compassion, whereby we may come to the discovery of them: two of which are more happy than others; namely, that either they whom they have wished to seduce, or they whom they had already seduced, shall, when they repent and are converted, point them out. Which is more easily effected, if their nefarious error, not by lying tricks, but by truthful reasonings be overthrown. In the writing of which it behoves thee to bestow thy pains, since God hath bestowed the gift that thou canst do this: which wholesome writings whereby their insane perversity is destroyed, becoming more and more known, and being by catholics, whether prelates who speak in the congregations, or any studious men full of zeal for God, every where diffused, these will be holy nets in which they may be caught truthfully, not with lies hunted after. For so being taken, either, of their own accord, they will confess what they have been, and others whom they know to be of the evil fellowship they will either kindly ¹ correct, or mercifully betray. Or else, if they shall be ashamed to confess what with long-continued simulation they have concealed, by the hidden hand of God healing them shall they be made whole.
