Chapter 14.--The Enlargement of Kingdoms is Unsuitably Ascribed to Jove; For If, as They Will Have It, Victoria is a Goddess, She Alone Would Suffice for This Business.

Here, first of all, I ask, why even the kingdom itself is not some god. For why should not it also be so, if Victory is a goddess? Or what need is there of Jove himself in this affair, if Victory favors and is propitious, and always goes to those whom she wishes to be victorious? With this goddess favorable and propitious, even if Jove was idle and did nothing, what nations could remain unsubdued, what kingdom would not yield? But perhaps it is displeasing to good men to fight with most wicked unrighteousness, and provoke with voluntary war neighbors who are peaceable and do no wrong, in order to enlarge a kingdom? If they feel thus, I entirely approve and praise them.

CHAPITRE XIV.

ON A TORT DE CROIRE QUE C’EST JUPITER QUI VEILLE A LA PROSPÉRITÉ DES EMPIRES, ATTENDU QUE LA VICTOIRE, SI ELLE EST UNE DÉESSE, COMME LE VEULENT LES PAÏENS, A PU SEULE SUFFIRE A CET EMPLOI.

Je demanderai ici tout d’abord pourquoi on n’a pas fait de l’empire un dieu. On n’en peut donner aucune raison, puisqu’on a fait de la victoire une déesse. Qu’est-il même besoin dans cette affaire de recourir à Jupiter, si la victoire a ses faveurs et ses préférences, et si elle va toujours trouver ceux qu’elle veut rendre vainqueurs? Avec la protection de cette déesse, quand même Jupiter resterait les bras croisés ou s’occuperait d’autre chose, de quelles nations, de quels royaumes ne viendrait-on pas à bout? On dira que les gens de bien sont arrêtés par la crainte d’entreprendre des guerres injustes qui n’ont d’autre objet que de s’agrandir aux dépens de voisins pacifiques et inoffensifs. Voilà de beaux sentiments; si ce sont ceux de mes adversaires, je m’en réjouis et je m’en félicite.
