Chapter 31.--What Benefits God Gives to the Followers of the Truth to Enjoy Over and Above His General Bounty.

For, besides such benefits as, according to this administration of nature of which we have made some mention, He lavishes on good and bad alike, we have from Him a great manifestation of great love, which belongs only to the good. For although we can never sufficiently give thanks to Him, that we are, that we live, that we behold heaven and earth, that we have mind and reason by which to seek after Him who made all these things, nevertheless, what hearts, what number of tongues, shall affirm that they are sufficient to render thanks to Him for this, that He hath not wholly departed from us, laden and overwhelmed with sins, averse to the contemplation of His light, and blinded by the love of darkness, that is, of iniquity, but hath sent to us His own Word, who is His only Son, that by His birth and suffering for us in the flesh, which He assumed, we might know how much God valued man, and that by that unique sacrifice we might be purified from all our sins, and that, love being shed abroad in our hearts by His Spirit, we might, having surmounted all difficulties, come into eternal rest, and the ineffable sweetness of the contemplation of Himself?

CHAPITRE XXXI.

QUELS BIENFAITS PARTICULIERS DIEU AJOUTE EN FAVEUR DES SECTATEURS DE LA VÉRITÉ A CEUX QU’IL ACCORDE A TOUS LES HOMMES.

Outre les biens qu’il .dispense aux bons et aux méchants dans ce gouvernement général de la nature dont nous venons de dire quelques mots, nous avons encore une preuve du grand amour qu’il porte aux bons en particulier. Certes, en nous donnant l’être, la vie, le privilége de contempler le ciel et la terre, enfin cette intelligence et cette raison qui nous élèvent jusqu’au Créateur de tant de merveilles, il nous a mis dans l’impuissance de trouver des remerciements dignes de ses bienfaits; mais si nous venons à considérer que dans l’état où nous sommes tombés, c’est-à-dire accablés sous le poids de nos péchés et devenus aveugles par la privation de la vraie lumière et l’amour de l’iniquité, loin de nous avoir abandonnés à nous-mêmes, il a daigné nous envoyer son Verbe, son Fils unique, pour nous apprendre par son incarnation et par sa passion combien l’homme est précieux à Dieu, pour nous purifier de tous nos péchés par ce sacrifice unique, répandre son amour dans nos coeurs par la grâce de son Saint-Esprit, et nous faire arriver, malgré tous les obstacles, au repos éternel et à l’ineffable douceur de la vision bienheureuse, quels coeurs et quelles paroles peuvent suffire aux actions de grâces qui lui sont dues?
