Par exemple : s'il fallait donner une aide à l'homme dans la personne de la femme, était-il nécessaire, était-il utile qu'elle fût formée du côté de l'homme endormi[^3]? S'il fallait fabriquer une arche pour échapper au déluge, était-il besoin ou que les mesures en fussent exactement données et appliquées, ou qu'elles fussent mentionnées dans des écrits qui devaient passer à la postérité? S'il était nécessaire d'y enfermer des animaux, afin de propager les espèces, fallait-il ce nombre précis de sept couples d'animaux mondes, et de deux d'immondes? Sans doute, l'arche avait besoin d'une entrée; mais était-il nécessaire qu'elle fût pratiquée dans le côté et que l'écrivain en fît mention[^4]? On donna à Abraham l'ordre d'immoler son fils; que le but de cet ordre ait été de mettre son obéissance à l'épreuve pour la faire éclater aux yeux de la postérité; qu'il ait été convenable que le fils portât le bois plutôt que son père déjà vieux; que le père n'ait pas eu permission de frapper son fils et de s'infliger une perte aussi cruelle, soit : mais quand même il n'y aurait pas eu de sang répandu, Abraham en eût-il été moins éprouvé? Ou s'il était nécessaire qu'il y eût sacrifice, en quoi ce bélier embarrassé dans un buisson par ses cornes et qui apparaît tout à coup, peut-il suppléer à la victime[^1]? Ainsi tout cela médité attentivement, toutes ces circonstances superflues mêlées aux nécessaires, avertissent d'abord l'âme humaine, c'est-à-dire l'âme raisonnable, qu'il y a un sens, et ensuite l'invitent à le chercher.

As an example of those particulars which have no meaning at all if not a symbolical one: Granting that it was necessary that woman should be made as an help meet for man, what natural reason can be assigned for her being taken from his side while he slept? Granting that an ark was required in order to escape from the flood, why should it have precisely these dimensions, and why should they be recorded for the devout study of future generations? Granting that the animals were brought into the ark to preserve the various races, why should there be seven clean and two unclean? Granting that the ark must have a door, why should it be in the side, and why should this fact be committed to writing? Abraham is commanded to sacrifice his son: we may allow that this proof of his obedience was required in order to make it conspicuous in all ages; we may allow, too, that it was a proper thing for the son to carry the wood instead of the aged father, and that in the end the fatal stroke was forbidden, lest the father should be left childless. But what had the shedding of the ram's blood to do with Abraham's trial? or if it was necessary to complete the sacrifice, was the ram any the better of being caught by the horns in a bush? The human mind, that is to say, a rational mind, is led by the consideration of the way in which these apparently superfluous things are blended with what is necessary, first to acknowledge their significance, and then to try to discover it.
