CHAPITRE III. IL DEMANDE QU'ON LES LUI FASSE CONNAÎTRE.

Bien que ce ne soit pas là de minces motifs pour me rendre ce chapitre suspect de falsification, cependant le plus grave à mes yeux c'est que, en étudiant attentivement, comme je l'ai dit, tous les écrits de Moïse, je n'y ai trouvé aucune prophétie touchant le Christ. Cependant, trouvant en toi un lecteur plus intelligent, j'espère en profiter, y gagner quelque chose; et je te serai reconnaissant, je l'avoue, si tu ne trompes pas, par un sentiment de jalousie, l'espoir d'avancement et d'instruction que m'inspire la confiance avec laquelle tu m'adresses tes reproches; mais que tu me fasses connaître tout ce que les écrits de Moïse renferment sur notre Dieu et Seigneur et qui m'aura peut-être échappé à la lecture. Et ne me dis pas, de grâce, ce que disent ordinairement les ignorants: qu'il suffit, pour croire, que le Christ ait affirmé que Moïse a écrit de lui. Ici, je t'en prie, ne fais pas attention à moi : ma profession m'oblige à croire, et je ne puis me dispenser d'ajouter foi à celui dont j'ai embrassé la doctrine; mais suppose que nous avons affaire à un juif, ou même à un gentil; quand nous leur aurons dit : Moïse a écrit du Christ, et qu'ils nous demanderont des preuves, que leur offrirons-nous ? Nous contenterons-nous de leur dire : Le Christ a dit cela, quand ils ne croient pas au Christ ? Evidemment il faut leur montrer ce que Moïse a écrit.

My chief reason, however, for suspecting the genuineness of this verse is what I said before, that in all my search of the writings of Moses I have found no prophecy of Christ. But now that I have found in you a reader of superior intelligence, I hope to learn something; and I promise to be grateful if no feeling of ill-will prevents you from giving me the benefit of your higher attainments, as your lofty style of reproof entitles me to expect from you. I ask for instruction in whatever the writings of Moses contain about our God and Lord which has escaped me in reading. I beseech you not to use the ignorant argument that Christ affirms Moses to have written of Him. For suppose you had not to deal with me, as in my case there is an obligation to believe Him whom I profess to follow, but with a Jew or a Gentile, in reply to the statement that Moses wrote of Christ, they will ask for proofs. What shall we say to them? We cannot quote Christ's authority, for they do not believe in Him. We must point out what Moses wrote.
