CHAPITRE XV. QUESTIONS DIVERSES. CE N'EST POINT LE MOMENT DE LES TRAITER.

Ceux qui approfondissent les saintes Ecritures demandent, à cette occasion, si la foi au Christ devant souffrir et ressusciter un jour, était aussi utile aux anciens justes qui la puisaient dans quelques révélations ou dans les livres des Prophètes, que l'est aux fidèles d'aujourd'hui la foi au Christ qui a souffert et qui est ressuscité ; si l'effusion du sang de l'Agneau qui a eu lieu, comme il le dit lui-même, « pour un grand nombre en rémission des péchés[^3] », a servi à quelque chose, a rendu purs ou plus purs ceux qui y croyaient comme à une chose à venir et sont sortis de cette vie avant qu'elle fût accomplie; et si la mort du Sauveur a étendu ses bienfaits jusqu'à ces justes au tombeau. Mais traiter maintenant cette question, la discuter, y démêler les éléments vrais et les étayer de preuves, serait un travail de longue haleine et qui n'est point nécessaire pour l'objet présent.

It is a question among the students of the sacred Scriptures, whether the faith in Christ before His passion and resurrection, which the righteous men of old learned by revelation or gathered from prophecy, had the same efficacy as faith has now that Christ has suffered and risen; or whether the actual shedding of the blood of the Lamb of God, which was, as He Himself says, for many for the remission of sins, ¹ conferred any benefit in the way of purifying or adding to the purity of those who looked forward in faith to the death of Christ, but left the world before it took place; whether, in fact, Christ's death reached to the dead, so as to effect their liberation. To discuss this question here, or to prove what has been ascertained on the subject, would take too long, besides being foreign from our present purpose.
