CHAPITRE XIX. ERREUR DE FAUSTE SUR CE POINT.

Fauste se trompe donc quand il affirme que le Seigneur Jésus a accompli certaines choses qui avaient été dites aux anciens justes avant la loi de Moïse, comme par exemple

« Tu ne tueras pas » : (précepte que le Christ est loin de rejeter, puisqu'il le confirme, en défendant la colère et toute parole injurieuse[^4] ) ; mais qu'il en a aboli d'autres, qui semblaient plus proprement appartenir à la loi des Hébreux, comme par exemple : « Oeil pour oeil, dent pour dent », qu'il semble avoir plutôt aboli que confirmé en disant :

« Et moi je vous dis de ne point résister aux mauvais traitements; mais si quelqu'un vous frappe sur la joue droite, présentez-lui encore l'autre[^1] ». Car nous disons que ce que les Manichéens croient aboli par le Christ qui aurait établi des principes contraires, a été autrefois sagement institué pour le temps, et est maintenant, non aboli, mais accompli par le Christ.

Faustus, therefore, is wrong in supposing that the Lord Jesus fulfilled some precepts of righteous men who lived before the law of Moses, such as, "Thou shall not kill," which Christ did not oppose, but rather confirmed by His prohibition of anger and abuse; and that He destroyed some things apparently peculiar to the Hebrew law, such as, "An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth," which Christ seems rather to abolish than to confirm, when He says, "But I say unto you, that ye resist not evil; but if any one smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also," ¹ and so on. But we say that even these things which Faustus thinks Christ destroyed by enjoining the opposite, were suitable to the times of the Old Testament, and were not destroyed, but fulfilled by Christ.
