CHAPITRE XXI. LA LOI QUI DÉFEND L'ADULTÈRE ÉTAIT DÉJÀ COMPLÈTE CHEZ LES ANCIENS JUSTES.

Est-ce par Hagard la loi qui défend l'adultère qui aurait été incomplète chez les anciens justes, jusqu'à ce que, pour la compléter, le Seigneur soit venu défendre de porter sur une femme même un regard de convoitise? Car c'est en ce sens que tu as rappelé ce passage : « Vous avez entendu qu'il a été dit : Tu ne commettras pas d'adultère; mais je vous dis de ne pas même convoiter ». « C'est un complément », dis-tu. Explique clairement ces paroles mêmes de l'Evangile, n'y mêle pas les tiennes pour les affaiblir, et cois ce que tu penses de ces justes de l'antiquité la plus reculée. « Vous avez entendu, dit le Sauveur, qu'il a été dit: Tu ne commettras pas d'adultère; mais moi je vous dis que quiconque aura regardé une femme pour la convoiter, a déjà commis l'adultère dans son cœur[^1] ». Est-ce que ces justes, Seth ou Enoch, ou d'autres semblables, commettaient l'adultère en leur coeur? Leur cœur n'était-il pas le temple de Dieu, ou commettaient-ils l'adultère dans le temple de Dieu? Tu n'oses pas le dire. Comment le Christ aurait-il complété sur ce point par son avènement une loi qui était déjà complète chez eux ?

Will it be said that the law in these early times was incomplete as regards not committing adultery, till it was completed by the Lord, who added that no one should look on a woman to lust after her? This is what you imply in the way you quote the words, "Ye have heard that it has been said, Thou shalt not commit adultery: but I say unto you, Do not lust even." "Here," you say, "is the fulfillment." But let us take the words as they stand in the Gospel, without any of your modifications, and see what character you give to those righteous men of antiquity. The words are: "Ye have heard that it has been said, thou shall not commit adultery; but I say unto you, that whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her, hath committed adultery with her already in his heart." ¹ In your opinion, then, Enoch and Seth, and the rest, committed adultery in their hearts; and either their heart was not the temple of God, or they committed adultery in the temple of God. But if you dare not say this, how can you say that Christ, when He came, fulfilled the law, which was already in the time of those men complete?
