Contre Fauste, le manichéen

CHAPITRE PREMIER. ACCEPTER L'ÉVANGILE, C'EST ACCOMPLIR CE QU'IL PRESCRIT.

Fauste. Admettez-vous l'Evangile? — Pourquoi cette question, quand vous voyez en moi la preuve que je le reçois, je veux dire l'observation de ses préceptes? Dois-je vous demander si vous le recevez, vous en qui on ne voit aucune marque d'un homme qui reçoit l'Evangile? Moi, j'ai quitté mon père, ma mère, mon épouse, mes enfants et tout ce que l'Evangile prescrit d'abandonner[^1], et vous me demandez si je reçois l'Evangile? Ignorez-vous donc encore ce qui constitue l'Evangile? Est-il autre chose que la prédication et les préceptes du Christ? Je n'ai plus voulu ni or, ni argent, j'ai cessé de porter de la monnaie dans ma ceinture, me contentant de la nourriture de chaque jour, ne m'inquiétant plus du lendemain, sans sollicitude pour savoir où je trouverais de quoi nourrir ou couvrir mon corps[^2], et vous me demandez si je reçois l'Evangile? Vous voyez en moi les béatitudes du Christ qui constituent l'Evangile, et vous m'adressez une semblable question? Vous me voyez pauvre, vous me voyez doux, vous me voyez pacifique, d'un coeur pur, pleurant, ayant faim, ayant soif, supportant les haines et les persécutions pour la justice, et vous doutez si je reçois l'Evangile? Je ne m'étonne plus que Jean-Baptiste, après avoir vu Jésus, et entendu le récit de ses oeuvres, ait demandé encore s'il était véritablement le Christ. Il mérita que Jésus ne daignât pas lui faire savoir qu'il l'était en effet, mais qu'il se contentât de lui faire rapporter ce qu'il avait déjà entendu : « Les aveugles voient, les sourds entendent, les morts ressuscitent[^3] ». Je puis à bon droit agir de même à votre égard: et, quand vous demandez si je reçois l'Evangile, me borner à. vous dire : J'ai tout quitté, mon père, ma mère, mon épouse, mes enfants, l'or, l'argent, le boire, le manger, les délices, les plaisirs : n'attendez pas d'autre réponse à vos questions, et estimez-vous heureux, si vous n'êtes pas scandalisé en moi.

Reply to Faustus the Manichaean

1.

Faustus said: Do I believe the gospel? You ask me if I believe it, though my obedience to its commands shows that I do. I should rather ask you if you believe it, since you give no proof of your belief. I have left my father, mother, wife, and children, and all else that the gospel requires; ¹ and do you ask if I believe the gospel? Perhaps you do not know what is called the gospel. The gospel is nothing else than the preaching and the precept of Christ. I have parted with all gold and silver, and have left off carrying money in my purse; content with daily food; without anxiety for tomorrow; and without solicitude about how I shall be fed, or where-withal I shall be clothed: and do you ask if I believe the gospel? You see in me the blessings of the gospel; ² and do you ask if I believe the gospel? You see me poor, meek, a peacemaker, pure in heart, mourning, hungering, thirsting, bearing persecutions and enmity for righteousness' sake; and do you doubt my belief in the gospel? One can understand now how John the Baptist, after seeing Jesus, and also hearing of His works, yet asked whether He was Christ. Jesus properly and justly did not deign to reply that He was; but reminded him of the works of which he had already heard: "The blind see, the deaf hear, the dead are raised." ³ In the same way, I might very well reply to your question whether I believe the gospel, by saying, I have left all, father, mother, wife, children, gold, silver, eating, drinking, luxuries, pleasures; take this as a sufficient answer to your questions, and believe that you will be blessed if you are not offended in me. ⁴
