CHAPITRE. PREMIER. FAUSTE SE PROPOSE DE RÉPONDRE AU REPROCHE D'ADORER LE SOLEIL ET D'ÊTRE PAÏEN.

Fauste. Pourquoi adorez-vous le soleil, si ce n'est parce que vous êtes des païens, un schisme de la gentilité, et non une secte? Il n'est donc pas hors de propos d'examiner aussi cette question, pour savoir plus clairement à qui de nous ce nom doit être appliqué. Si je t'exposais simplement une croyance, comme je le ferais avec des amis, peut-être aurais-je l'air de feindre pour m'excuser, ou (ce qu'à Dieu ne plaise !) de rougir de recevoir les lumières divines. Cependant prends tout ceci dans quel sens tu voudras : pour moi, je ne me repentirai pas d'avoir parlé, ne fût-ce que pour instruire quelques ignorants et leur apprendre que notre religion n'a rien de commun avec le paganisme.

Reply to Faustus the Manichaean

Faustus said: You ask why we worship the sun, if we are a sect or separate religion, and not Pagans, or merely a schism of the Gentiles. It may therefore be as well to inquire into the matter, that we may see whether the name of Gentiles is more applicable to you or to us. Perhaps, in giving you in a friendly way this simple account of my faith, I shall appear to be making an apology for it, as if I were ashamed, which God forbid, of doing homage to the divine luminaries. You may take it as you please; but I shall not regret what I have done if I succeed in conveying to some at least this much knowledge, that our religion has nothing in common with that of the Gentiles.
