CHAPITRE PREMIER. FAUSTE CHOISIT. CE QUI LUI CONVIENT DANS LE NOUVEAU TESTAMENT, COMME LES CATHOLIQUES DANS L'ANCIEN.

Fauste. Si tu admets l'Evangile, tu dois croire tout ce qu'il renferme. — Quoi donc ! parce que tu admets l'Ancien Testament, admets-tu indifféremment tout ce qui y est consigné? Vous en extrayez simplement les prophéties qui annoncent un roi futur pour les Juifs, Jésus selon vous; puis quelques axiomes vulgaires de la vie sociale, comme : « Tu ne tueras pas; tu ne commettras pas d'adultère[^1] »; après quoi vous passez tout le reste sous silence, et l'estimez à l'égal de ce que Paul regarde comme du fumier[^2]. Qu'y a-t-il donc d'étrange, qu'y a-t-il d'étonnant à ce que, moi aussi, je prenne dans le Nouveau Testament ce qu'il y a de plus pur, ce qui convient à mon salut, et que je laisse de côté tout ce que vos ancêtres y ont frauduleusement introduit, au grand détriment de sa dignité et de sa beauté ?

Reply to Faustus the Manichaean

Faustus said: You say, that if we believe the Gospel, we must believe everything that is written in it. Why, then, since you believe the Old Testament, do you not believe all that is found in any part of it? Instead of that, you cull out only the prophecies telling of a future King of the Jews, for you suppose this to be Jesus, along with a few precepts of common morality, such as, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not commit adultery; and all the rest you pass over, thinking of the other things as Paul thought of the things which he held to be dung. ¹ Why, then, should it seem strange or singular in me that I select from the New Testament whatever is purest, and helpful for my salvation, while I set aside the interpolations of your predecessors, which impair its dignity and grace?
