CHAPITRE IV. COURTE RÉPONSE A FAUSTE. QUESTIONS OBSCURES.

Augustin. En sûreté, misérable ! comment serais-tu en sûreté, toi qui prétends haïr les Patriarches parce qu'ils sont impurs, et qui déplores encore l'impureté de ton dieu? Du moins tu accordes qu'après l'avènement du Sauveur, ces Patriarches ont été purifiés et placés dans l'heureux séjour du repos, tandis que votre dieu, même après l'avènement du Sauveur, est encore gisant dans les ténèbres, plongé dans tous les crimes, mêlé à toutes les impuretés; en sorte que, non-seulement ces hommes ont mieux valu que votre dieu pendant leur vie, mais qu'ils ont été plus heureux que lui dans leur mort. D'autre part, quels séjours habitaient les justes morts avant l'incarnation du Christ, et la passion du Sauveur les a-t-elle fait passer à un état meilleur, ceux qui non-seulement avaient cru qu'il viendrait, qu'il souffrirait, qu'il ressusciterait, mais qui l'avaient même annoncé, comme il le fallait, par inspiration prophétique : ce sont des questions qui ne peuvent s'éclaircir que par les saintes Ecritures, si tant est que cela soit possible, et non point se décider sur les téméraires opinions des premiers venus, et encore moins sur les assertions perverses d'une hérésie exécrable et si éloignée de la vérité. C'est en vain que Fauste use de détours pour faire luire l'espérance qu'un jour on pourra obtenir, après la mort, ce qu'on ne se sera point mis en peine de mériter pendant la vie. Il serait heureux pour vous de renoncer à cette erreur, pendant que vous vivez, de connaître et d'embrasser la vérité de la foi catholique. Autrement, ce que l'injuste se promet lui fera complètement défaut, quand les menaces que Dieu lui fait commenceront à s'accomplir.

Augustin replied: Poor safety, indeed! when you contradict yourself by hating the patriarchs as impure, at the same time that you grieve for your impure god. You allow that, since the advent of the Saviour, the patriarchs have had purity restored, and have enjoyed the rest of the blessed; while your god, even after the Saviour's advent, still lies in darkness, is still sunk in the ocean of iniquity, still wallows in the mire of all uncleanness. These men, therefore, were not only better than your god in their lives, but also happier in their death. Where was the abode of the just who departed from this life before Christ's coming in the flesh, and whether their condition also was improved by the passion of Christ, in whom they had believed as to come, and to suffer, and to rise again, and had, moreover, foretold this in suitable language under the guidance of the Spirit of prophecy, is to be discovered from the Holy Scriptures, if any clear discovery in this matter is possible; we are not called on to adopt the crude notions of all and sundry, still less the heretical opinions of men who have gone astray into such egregious error. There is a vain attempt here on the part of Faustus to introduce by a side-door the idea that we may obtain something after this life besides the due reward of our conduct in this life. It will be better for you to abandon your error while you are still alive, and to embrace and hold the truths of the Catholic faith. Otherwise the expectations of the unrighteous will be sadly disappointed when God begins to fulfill His threatenings to the unrighteous.
