CHAPITRE X. AUTRE RAPPROCHEMENT ENTRE CAÏN ET LE PEUPLE JUIF.

Dieu interroge Caïn, non comme un ignorant qui veut apprendre, mais comme un juge qui doit punir un coupable: il lui demande où est son frère. Caïn répond qu'il ne le sait pas et qu'il n'est pas son gardien, Jusqu'ici que nous répondent les Juifs, quand nous les interrogeons par la voix de Dieu, c'est-à-dire des saintes Ecritures, touchant le Christ, sinon qu'ils ne connaissent pas même celui que nous appelons le Christ? L'ignorance de Caïn était feinte, la négation des Juifs est mensongère. Ils seraient en un sens les gardiens du Christ, s'ils avaient voulu recevoir et garder la foi chrétienne. Car celui qui garde le Christ dans son coeur, ne dit pas comme Caïn : « Est-ce que je suis le gardien de mon frère? — Dieu dit à Caïn : Qu'as-tu fait? La « voix du sang de ton frère crie de la terre jusqu'à moi ». C'est ainsi que la voix de Dieu confond les Juifs dans les saintes Écritures. Car le sang du Christ a une voix puissante sur la terre, puisque, après l'avoir reçu, toutes les nations répondent : Ainsi soit-il. C'est là la voix claire de ce sang; voix qu'il fait lui-même entendre par la bouche des fidèles qu'il a rachetés.

God asks Cain where his brother is, not as if He did not know, but as a judge asks a guilty criminal. Cain replies that he knows not, and that he is not his brother's keeper. And what answer can the Jews give at this day, when we ask them with the voice of God, that is, of the sacred Scriptures, about Christ, except that they do not know the Christ that we speak of? Cain's ignorance was pretended, and the Jews are deceived in their refusal of Christ. Moreover, they would have been in a sense keepers of Christ, if they had been willing to receive and keep the Christian faith. For the man who keeps Christ in his heart does not ask, like Cain, Am I my brother's keeper? Then God says to Cain, "What hast thou done? The voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground." So the voice of God in the Holy Scriptures accuses the Jews. For the blood of Christ has a loud voice on the earth, when the responsive Amen of those who believe in Him comes from all nations. This is the voice of Christ's blood, because the clear voice of the faithful redeemed by His blood is the voice of the blood itself.
