CHAPITRE XXI. IMPOSSIBILITÉ DE TOUT DIRE SUR CE SUJET.
En y mettant même toute la brièveté que j'ai mise à parcourir ces points, il serait trop long de toucher à tout : de dire, par exemple, pourquoi c'est la six cent et unième année de Noé, c'est-à-dire après les six cents ans achevés, que l'arche s'ouvre et que le mystère jusque là caché se révèle; pourquoi on dit que la terre se dessécha le vingt-septième jour du second mois[^3], comme si le baptême eût cessé d'être nécessaire, après le nombre de cinquante-sept jours (car le cinquante-septième jour est précisément le vingt-septième du second mois, nombre formé de l'union de l'esprit et du corps, et renfermant sept fois huit, plus un, à cause du lien de l'unité) ; pourquoi ceux qui étaient entrés séparés dans l'arche, en sortirent réunis; car il avait été dit que Noé entra dans l'arche, et ses fils, et sa femme et les femmes de ses fils[^4]: les hommes et les femmes mentionnés à part. En effet, tant que dure ce sacrement, la chair convoite contre l'esprit et l'esprit contre la chair[^1]. Or, Noé sort avec sa femme, ses fils, et les femmes de ses fils[^2], mentionnés tous ensemble, hommes et femmes; parce que, à la fin des siècles et à la résurrection des justes, le corps sera uni à l'esprit dans une paix entière et parfaite, à l'abri de tous les besoins de la mortalité et des résistances de la convoitise. C'est pourquoi, bien qu'il soit entré dans l'arche des animaux mondes et immondes ; au sortir de l'arche, on n'offre en sacrifice à Dieu que des animaux mondes[^5].

There are many other points which we cannot take notice of even in this cursory manner. Why in the six hundred and first year of Noah's life--that is, after six hundred years were completed--the covering of the ark is removed, and the hidden mystery, as it were, disclosed. Why the earth is said to have dried on the twenty-seventh day of the second month; as if the number fifty-seven denoted the completion of the rite of baptism. For the twenty-seventh day of the second month is the fifty-seventh day of the year; and the number fifty-seven is seven times eight, which are the numbers of the spirit and the body, with one over, to denote the bond of unity. Why they leave the ark together, though they entered separately. For it is said: "Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives with him, into the ark;" the men and the women being spoken of separately; which denotes the time when the flesh lusteth against the spirit, and the spirit against the flesh. But they go forth, Noah and his wife, and his sons and their wives,--the men and women together. For in the end of the world, and in the resurrection of the just, the body will be united to the spirit in perfect harmony, undisturbed by the wants and the passions of mortality. Why, after leaving the ark, only clean animals are offered in sacrifice to God, though both clean and unclean were in the ark.
