But why Matthew begins with Abraham and descends to Joseph, while Luke begins with Joseph and ascends, not to Abraham, but to God, who made man, and, by giving a commandment, gave him power to become, by believing, a son of God; and why Matthew records the generations at the commencement of his book, Luke after the baptism of the Saviour by John; and what is the meaning of the number of the generations in Matthew, who divides them into three sections of fourteen each, though in the whole sum there appears to be one wanting; while in Luke the number of generations recorded after the baptism amount to seventy-seven, which number the Lord Himself enjoins in connection with the forgiveness of sins, saying, "Not only seven times, but seventy-seven times;"--these things you will never understand, unless either you are taught by some Catholic of superior stamp, who has studied the sacred Scriptures, and has made all the progress possible, or you yourselves turn from your error, and in a Christian spirit ask that you may receive, seek that you may find, and knock that it may be opened to you.

Maintenant pourquoi saint Matthieu parle-t-il d'Abraham en descendant jusqu'à Joseph, tandis que saint Luc commence à Joseph en remontant, non plus jusqu'à Abraham, mais jusqu'à Dieu, qui a créé l'homme et qui, après lui avoir imposé ses commandements, lui a donné le pouvoir de devenir par la foi enfant de Dieu ? pourquoi le premier a placé sa généalogie au commencement de son livre, et le second après le baptême du Sauveur par saint Jean? quelle est la signification du nombre des générations selon saint Matthieu, qui en forme trois séries, de quatorze chacune, bien qu'on en retrouve une en moins dans la somme totale; et pourquoi le nombre des générations telles que saint Luc les rapporte à l'occasion du baptême du Seigneur, s'élève jusqu'à soixante-dix-sept, nombre que le Seigneur lui-même applique à la rémission des péchés, en disant : « Vous pardonnerez non-seulement sept fois, mais soixante-dix-sept fois[^1]? » Ce sont là autant de questions insolubles pour vous, à moins que vous ne soyez éclairés par quelque catholique, spécialement adonné à l'étude et très-versé dans la connaissance des divines Ecritures, ou que, désabusés de vos erreurs, et animés des sentiments de la piété catholique, vous ne demandiez pour recevoir, vous ne cherchiez pour trouver, et vous ne frappiez pour entrer.
