What other reason has your heretical folly to give for thinking that there is no prophecy of Christ in the words, "I will raise up unto them a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee?" Your showing Christ to be unlike Moses is no reason; for we can show that in other respects He is like. How can you object to Christ's being called a prophet, since He condescended to be a man, and actually foretold many future events? What is a prophet, but one who predicts events beyond human foresight? So Christ says of Himself: "A prophet is not without honor, save in his own country." ¹ But, turning from you, since you have already acknowledged that your profession of Christianity obliges you to believe the Gospel, I address myself to the Jew, who enjoys the poor privilege of liberty from the yoke of Christ, and who therefore thinks it allowable to say: Your Christ spoke falsely; Moses wrote nothing of him.

CHAPITRE XVIII. LE CHRIST A ÉTÉ PROPHÈTE.

Sur quel fondement donc, ô vaniteuse hérésie, espères-tu prouver que ce n'est point au Christ que se rapporte cette prédiction «Je leur susciterai, du milieu de leurs frères, un prophète semblable à toi », quand tu ne le peux pas même par les dissemblances que tu cherches à faire ressortir? Car, sous les autres points de vue, nous montrons la ressemblance. Est-ce parce qu'on donne le nom de prophète à celui qui a daigné se faire homme, et a prédit tant de choses à venir? A moins peut-être qu'un prophète ne soit autre chose qu'un homme qui annonce l'avenir au-delà des prévisions humaines. C'est pourquoi le Christ a dit de lui-même : « Un prophète n'est pas sans honneur, si ce n'est dans sa patrie[^1] ». Mais je reviendrai à toi, qui t'es tout à Meure avoué vaincu, quand tu as dit que ta profession t'oblige à croire à l'Evangile. Faisons comparaître le juif qui, dans sa fausse liberté, se soustrait au joug du Christ, et se croit pour cela encore endroit de dire : Le Christ a menti, Moïse n'a rien écrit qui le regarde.
