18.

What other reason has your heretical folly to give for thinking that there is no prophecy of Christ in the words, "I will raise up unto them a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee?" Your showing Christ to be unlike Moses is no reason; for we can show that in other respects He is like. How can you object to Christ's being called a prophet, since He condescended to be a man, and actually foretold many future events? What is a prophet, but one who predicts events beyond human foresight? So Christ says of Himself: "A prophet is not without honor, save in his own country." ¹ But, turning from you, since you have already acknowledged that your profession of Christianity obliges you to believe the Gospel, I address myself to the Jew, who enjoys the poor privilege of liberty from the yoke of Christ, and who therefore thinks it allowable to say: Your Christ spoke falsely; Moses wrote nothing of him.

Was bleibt dir also, verlogene Häresie, noch an Argumenten, mit denen du meinst, beweisen zu können, dass jener Satz (deut. 18,15. 18): Ich werde ihnen einen Propheten ähnlich dir aus dem Kreis ihrer Brüder erwecken, keine Prophetie auf Christus enthalte, nachdem dir das nicht einmal mit dem Hinweis auf ihre Unähnlichkeit gelingt? Denn aufgrund anderer Kriterien können wir selber nachweisen, dass sie ähnlich sind. Etwa weil Christus damit als Prophet bezeichnet würde, er, der es nicht verschmähte, Mensch zu sein, und soviel Zukünftiges vorausgesagt hat? Ist denn ein Prophet etwas anderes als ein Mensch, der über menschliche Mutmassungen hinaus Zukünftiges ankündigt? So sagte Christus ja auch von sich selber (Mt. 13,57): Nirgends gilt ein Prophet so wenig wie in seiner Heimat. Doch ich werde mich später wieder dir zuwenden, denn du hast ja kurz vorher bekannt (442,15; 454,22), dass du nun von diesem Bibelwort (Joh. 5,46 b) überzeugt bist, indem du sagtest, dass du dich durch dein Bekenntnis zum Glauben an das Evangelium verpflichtet habest. Jetzt aber möge der Jude selber vortreten, der seinen Nacken, ganz unbelastet vom Joch Christi, stolz erhebt, und deshalb meint, noch sagen zu dürfen: Euer Christus hat gelogen; Moses hat nicht über ihn geschrieben.
