Reply to Faustus the Manichaean

Faustus said: Do I believe the Old Testament? If it bequeaths anything to me, I believe it; if not, I reject it. It would be an excess of forwardness to take the documents of others which pronounce me disinherited. Remember that the promise of Canaan in the Old Testament is made to Jews, that is, to the circumcised, who offer sacrifice, and abstain from swine's flesh, and from the other animals which Moses pronounces unclean, and observe Sabbaths, and the feast of unleavened bread, and other things of the same kind which the author of the Testament enjoined. Christians have not adopted these observances, and no one keeps them; so that if we will not take the inheritance, we should surrender the documents. This is my first reason for rejecting the Old Testament, unless you teach me better. My second reason is, that this inheritance is such a poor fleshly thing, without any spiritual blessings, that after the New Testament, and its glorious promise of the kingdom of heaven and eternal life, I think it not worth the taking.

Gegen Faustus

Faustus sagte: Nimmst du das Alte Testament an? Wenn ich darin als Erbe eingesetzt bin, nehme ich es an; wenn nicht, nehme ich es nicht an.

Das wäre nun doch ziemlich unredlich, eine Testamentsurkunde zu beanspruchen, die mich als Erben ausschliesst! Du weisst ja sicher, dass im Alten Testament das Land Kanaan verheissen ist (cf. Gen. 15,18; 17,8), aber nur den Juden, d.h. den Beschnittenen, denen, die Opfer darbringen, sich des Schweinefleischs und anderer von Moses als unrein bezeichneter Fleischarten enthalten, den Sabbat beobachten und das Fest der Ungesäuerten Brote, und was ihnen der Erblasser sonst noch zur Beobachtung aufgegeben hat (cf. Lev. 11,4 ff.; ex. 12; 20,8)? Da nun diese Vorschriften bei niemandem unter den Christen Anklang fanden – denn niemand von uns befolgt sie ja –, ist es doch nur angemessen, dass wir gleichzeitig mit dem Ausschlagen der Erbschaft auch die Erbschaftsurkunde zurückgeben. Dies also ist der Grund, warum meiner Meinung nach das Alte Testament abzulehnen ist; aber vielleicht belehrst du mich eines bessern. Der zweite Grund aber ist, dass seine Erbschaft dazu noch so kläglich, so körperlich, für das Wohl der Seele so wenig zuträglich ist, dass ich sie, angesichts jener glückseligen Verheissung des Neuen Testaments, die mir das Himmelreich und das ewige Leben verspricht, voller Widerwillen ausschlagen würde, selbst wenn der Erblasser sie mir ohne Vorbedingungen aufdrängen wollte.
