Reply to Faustus the Manichaean

Faustus said: On one occasion, when addressing a large audience, I was asked by one of the crowd, Do you believe that Jesus was born of Mary? I replied, Which Jesus do you mean? for in the Hebrew it is the name of several people. One was the son of Nun, the follower of Moses; ¹ another was the son of Josedech the high priest; ² again, another is spoken of as the son of David; ³ and another is the Son of God. ⁴ Of which of these do you ask whether I believe him to have been born of Mary? His answer was, The Son of God, of course. On what evidence, said I, oral or written, am I to believe this? He replied, On the authority of Matthew. What, said I, did Matthew write? He replied, "The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham" (Matt. i. 1). Then said I, I was afraid you were going to say, The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the Son of God; and I was prepared to correct you. Now that you have quoted the verse accurately, you must nevertheless be advised to pay attention to the words. Matthew does not profess to give an account of the generation of the Son of God, but of the son of David.

Fauste. Un jour que je disputais dans une nombreuse assemblée, un homme prit la parole et me dit : Admets-tu que Jésus soit né de Marie ? — De quel Jésus parles-tu ? répondis-je. Car il y a eu plusieurs Jésus dans la loi hébraïque : un, fils de Navé et disciple de Moïse[^1] ; un autre, fils du grand-prêtre Josédech[^2] ; un troisième, qu'on appelle fils de David[^3] ; un autre encore qu'on appelle Fils de Dieu[^4]. Duquel des quatre me demandes-tu si je le crois fils de Marie ? — Du Fils de Dieu, réplique-t-il. — Et sur quelle autorité, d'après quel maître l'admettrais-je ? — D'après Matthieu. — Qu'a donc écrit Matthieu ? — « Livre de la généalogie de Jésus-Christ, fils de David, fils d'Abraham, etc....[^5] » — Je pensais, repartis je, que tu allais dire : Livre de la généalogie de Jésus-Christ Fils de Dieu, et je me disposais à protester; mais comme tu as cité le texte si fidèlement, je n'ai qu'une observation à te faire : c'est de réfléchir à ce que tu viens de dire. Car ce n'est pas la généalogie du Fils de Dieu que Matthieu prétend s'être proposé d'écrire, mais celle du fils de David.
