Reply to Faustus the Manichaean

Faustus said: If Jesus was not born, He cannot have suffered; but since He did suffer, He must have been born. I advise you not to have recourse to logical inference in these matters, or else your whole faith will be shaken. For, even according to you, Jesus was born miraculously of a virgin; which the argument from consequents to antecedents shows to be false. For your argument might thus be turned against you: If Jesus was born of a woman, He must have been begotten by a man; but He was not begotten by a man, therefore He was not born of a woman. If, as you believe, He could be born without being begotten, why could He not also suffer without being brought forth?

CHAPITRE PREMIER. SI JÉSUS A PU NAÎTRE D'UNE VIERGE, IL A AUSSI BIEN PU MOURIR SANS AVOIR ÉTÉ ENFANTÉ.

Fauste. Si Jésus n'est pas né, il n'a pas souffert; mais s'il a souffert, donc il est né. — Il ne vous sert à rien, croyez-moi, de raisonner ici d'après les lois de la nature : autrement, votre foi tout entière croule par la base. Car vous croyez que Jésus est né d'une Vierge, sans la participation de l'homme; or, si les prémices doivent se prouver par la conséquence, cela deviendra faux. En effet, on pourra vous répondre : Si Jésus est né d'une femme, donc il a un homme pour père, et s'il n'a pas un homme pour père, donc il n'est pas né d'une femme. Or, il a pu, selon vous, naître sans la participation d'un homme pourquoi donc n'aurait-il pas pu mourir sans avoir été enfanté?
