Besides, you have in your Book of Daniel the account of the three youths, which you will find it difficult to reconcile with the opinion that to abstain from meats is the doctrine of devils. For we are told that they abstained not only from what the law forbade, but even from what it allowed; ¹ and you are wont to praise them, and count them as martyrs; though they too followed the doctrine of devils, if this is to be taken as the apostle's opinion. And Daniel himself declares that he fasted for three weeks, not eating flesh or drinking wine, while he prayed for his people. ² How is it that he boasts of this doctrine of devils, and glories in the falsehood of a lying spirit?

CHAPITRE II. OBJECTION TIRÉE DE DANIEL ET DES TROIS ENFANTS.

Il y a d'ailleurs un passage de Daniel, relatif aux trois enfants, qui doit absolument vous confondre, s'il est prouvé que s'abstenir de certains aliments soit une superstition diabolique. On lit en effet que ces trois enfants, que vous admirez fort et que vous comptez au nombre des martyrs, s'abstinrent non-seulement des aliments interdits par la loi, mais de ceux mêmes qu'elle permettait[^1]. Et cependant, si le texte de l'Apôtre est authentique, ils suivaient en cela l'enseignement des démons. Bien plus, Daniel lui-même atteste, que, pendant trois semaines de jours, il jeûna, ne mangea pas de chair, ne but pas de vin, tout occupé à prier pour son peuple[^2]. Comment donc en vient-il, lui aussi, à se glorifier de la doctrine des démons et à tirer vanité des folles inspirations de l'esprit séducteur?
