Reply to Faustus the Manichaean

Faustus said: Another reason for not receiving the Old Testament is, that if it was allowable for the apostles, who were born under it, to abandon it, much more may I, who was not born under it, be excused for not thrusting myself into it. We Gentiles are not born Jews, nor Christians either. Out of the same Gentile world some are induced by the Old Testament to become Jews, and some by the New Testament to become Christians. It is as if two trees, a sweet and a bitter, drew from one soil the sap which each assimilates to its own nature. The apostle passed from the bitter to the sweet; it would be madness in me to change from the sweet to the bitter.

CHAPITRE PREMIER. DEUX ARBRES.

Fauste. Pourquoi n'admettez-vous pas l'Ancien Testament? — Si les Apôtres, nés sous son règne, ont pu s'en séparer, pourquoi ne serais-je pas libre de ne pas admettre un Testament sous lequel je ne suis pas né? Nous naissons tous gentils, et non pas juifs, ni chrétiens ; du sein de cette même gentilité les uns sont attirés par l'Ancien Testament qui les fait juifs, les autres par le Nouveau qui les initie au christianisme : c'est comme deux arbres, l'un doux et l'autre amer, qui puisent par leurs racines le suc d'une même terre, qu'ils transforment selon leur nature respective. Quand les Apôtres passent de l'amer au doux, quelle folie de ma part de quitter le doux pour l'amer ?
