CHAPITRE IV.

LE FILS GLORIFIÉ PAR LE PÈRE.

6. Et maintenant secouez votre sommeil, si vous le pouvez, ô vous qui vous flattez d’appuyer l’infériorité du Fils à l’égard du Père sur cette parole : « Père, glorifiez-moi (Jean, XVII, 1 ) ». Eh quoi! voilà que l’Esprit-Saint lui-même (370) glorifie le Fils! mais est-ce une raison pour affirmer qu’il lui est supérieur? Or, l’Esprit-Saint ne glorifie le Fils que parce qu’il reçoit du Fils, et il n’en reçoit ce qu’il doit annoncer que parce que le Fils lui-même a fout ce que possède Je Père. Ainsi il est évident que tout ce qui est au Père, appartient non-seulement au Fils, mais encore à l’Esprit-Saint, puisque ce dernier a le pouvoir de glorifier le même Fils que Je Père glorifie. Enfin, si mes adversaires veulent’ absolument que celui qui glorifie soit plus grand que celui qui est glorifié, du moins ne pourront-ils pas ne point reconnaître une égalité parfaite entre le Père et le Fils qui se glorifient réciproquement. Il est en effet écrit que le Fils glorifie le Père. « Père, dit Jésus-Christ, je vous ai glorifié sur la terre (Jean, XVII, 4)». Mais qu’ils évitent alors une nouvelle erreur, qui serait de croire l’Esprit-Saint supérieur au Père et au Fils, parce que, d’un côté, il glorifie le Fils que glorifie aussi le Père, et que, de l’autre, l’Ecriture ne dit nulle part qu’il soit lui-même glorifié par le Père, ou par le Fils.

Chapter 4.--The Glorification of the Son by the Father Does Not Prove Inequality.

6. But here also let them wake up if they can, who have thought this, too, to be a testimony on their side, to show that the Father is greater than the Son, because the Son hath said, "Father, glorify me." Why, the Holy Spirit also glorifies Him. Pray, is the Spirit, too, greater than He? Moreover, if on that account the Holy Spirit glorifies the Son, because He shall receive of that which is the Son's, and shall therefore receive of that which is the Son's because all things that the Father has are the Son's also; it is evident that when the Holy Spirit glorifies the Son, the Father glorifies the Son. Whence it may be perceived that all things that the Father hath are not only of the Son, but also of the Holy Spirit, because the Holy Spirit is able to glorify the Son, whom the Father glorifies. But if he who glorifies is greater than he whom he glorifies, let them allow that those are equal who mutually glorify each other. But it is written, also, that the Son glorifies the Father; for He says, "I have glorified Thee on the earth." ¹ Truly let them beware lest the Holy Spirit be thought greater than both, because He glorifies the Son whom the Father glorifies, while it is not written that He Himself is glorified either by the Father or by the Son.
