This treatise was written about 400 A.D. Concerning it Aug. in Retract. Book II. c. xviii., says: I have written seven books on Baptism against the Donatists, who strive to defend themselves by the authority of the most blessed bishop and martyr Cyprian; in which I show that nothing is so effectual for the refutation of the Donatists, and for shutting their mouths directly from upholding their schism against the Catholic Church, as the letters and act of Cyprian.

Ce qui frappe dans cet ouvrage, outre la puissance des raisonnements et des explications catholiques d’Augustin, ce sont les pieux et touchants égards de ce génie pour un autre génie chrétien qui se trompa sur un point de la foi, et dont l’erreur était devenue une arme dangereuse entre les mains des Donatistes. Le coeur d’Augustin se révèle tout entier dans ces heureux et magnifiques efforts pour excuser un grand homme: Le souvenir du martyre de Cyprien lui apparaît comme sa justification la plus sublime. Cyprien s’est trompé, mais il est resté dans l’unité de l’Eglise.
