4° Les ornements affectés, le luxe des vêtements, le soin des formes du corps ne conviennent qu’à des courtisanes; les femmes qui se parent le plus sont celles qui ont perdu toute pudeur, Ainsi, dans les Ecritures où Dieu vous a laissé ses enseignements, nous trouvons la description de la cité prostituée. Elle est parée avec magnificence, elle brille sous ses ornements, mais elle doit périr avec eux, ou plutôt à cause d’eux. Et, dit le texte sacré, un des sept anges qui portaient les sept fioles s’approcha de moi en disant : viens, je te montrerai la condamnation de la grande courtisane assise sur des eaux nombreuses qui a fait partager sa corruption aux rois de la terre. Et il me conduisit en esprit, et je vis une femme assise sur la bête, et cette femme était couverte d’un manteau de pourpre; elle étincelait d’or, de diamants et de perles ; elle tenait dans sa main une coupe d’or pleine des blasphèmes, des impuretés et des fornications de toute la terre (Apoc., XVII). Que les vierges chastes et pures fuient ces ornements, ces habits, ces parures qui ne peuvent convenir qu’à des femmes perdues.

12.
The characteristics of ornaments, and of garments, and the allurements of beauty, are not fitting for any but prostitutes and immodest women; and the dress of none is more precious than of those whose modesty is lowly. 1 Thus in the Holy Scriptures, by which the Lord wished us to be both instructed and admonished, the harlot city is described more beautifully arrayed and adorned, and with her ornaments; and the rather on account of those very ornaments about to perish. "And there came," it is said, "one of the seven angels, which had the seven phials, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will show thee the judgment of the great whore, that sitteth upon many waters, with whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication. And he carried me away in spirit; and I saw a woman sit upon a beast, and that woman was arrayed in a purple and scarlet mantle, and was adorned with gold, and precious stones, and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand, full of curses, and filthiness, and fornication of the whole earth." 2 Let chaste and modest virgins avoid the dress of the unchaste, the manners of the immodest, the ensigns of brothels, the ornaments of harlots.
