On the Dress of Virgins

9.

You say that you are wealthy and rich. But not everything that can be done ought also to be done; nor ought the broad desires that arise out of the pride of the world to be extended beyond the honour and modesty of virginity; since it is written, "All things are lawful, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful, but all things edify not." ¹ For the rest, if you dress your hair sumptuously, and walk so as to draw attention in public, and attract the eyes of youth upon you, and draw the sighs of young men after you, nourish the lust of concupiscence, and inflame the fuel of sighs, so that, although you yourself perish not, yet you cause others to perish, and offer yourself, as it were, a sword or poison to the spectators; you cannot be excused on the pretence that you are chaste and modest in mind. Your shameful dress and immodest ornament accuse you; nor can you be counted now among Christ's maidens and virgins, since you live in such a manner as to make yourselves objects of desire.

Kap. 9. Putz und äußerer Prunk erweckt in anderen sinnliche Begierden und verletzt die innere Keuschheit.

Wohlhabend nennst du dich und reich. Aber nicht alles, was man tun kann, darf man auch tun, und die allzu weitgehenden und aus weltlicher Hoffart entspringenden Wünsche dürfen die Grenzen der jungfräulichen Ehre und Scham nicht überschreiten. Denn es steht geschrieben: „Alles ist erlaubt, aber nicht alles ist nützlich; alles ist erlaubt, aber nicht alles baut auf"¹ . Wenn du dich aber gar zu verschwenderisch aufputzest und Aufsehen erregst, sobald du nur auf der S. 70 Straße daherkommst, wenn du die Augen der Jugend auf dich ziehst und den Jünglingen hinter dir Seufzer entlockst, wenn du die lüsterne Begierde nährst und den Funken der Hoffnung in ihnen entfachst, wenn du — solltest du auch selbst nicht dabei zugrunde gehen — immerhin andere zugrunde richtest und dich für alle, die dich sehen, so gefährlich erweisest wie Dolch und Gift: dann kannst du dich nicht mehr damit entschuldigen, als seiest du der Gesinnung nach noch keusch und züchtig. Lügen straft dich die schamlose Kleidung und der unzüchtige Putz, und du kannst nicht mehr zu den Töchtern und Jungfrauen Christi gerechnet werden, wenn du so lebst, daß du sinnliche Liebe erwecken kannst.
