XI.

6° Ne dissimulons pas la vérité, mes frères, ne cachons ni l’origine ni la cause de nos blessures. Plusieurs se sont laissé séduire par un amour aveugle de leur fortune. Comment auraient-ils été prêts à se retirer, quand ils étaient attachés à la terre par tant de liens? Telles sont les entraves, telles sont les chaînes qui les ont retenus dans leur patrie. C’est ainsi que leur vertu a été arrêtée dans son essor, leur foi abaissée, leur intelligence enchaînée, leur âme réduite en captivité. Dominés par les passions terrestres, ils sont devenus la proie du serpent, qui, selon la sentence divine, dévore la terre.

Aussi le Seigneur vous dit: Si vous voulez être parfait, allez, vendez tous vos biens, donnez-les aux pauvres, et vous aurez un trésor dans le Ciel; puis, venez et suivez-moi (Matt., XIX). Si les riches (69) suivaient ce précepte, leurs richesses ne seraient pas pour eux une cause de ruine. En plaçant leur trésor dans le Ciel, ils n’auraient pas en lui un ennemi domestique: leur coeur, leur esprit, leur pensée seraient dans le Ciel, si leur trésor y était. De plus, ils ne pourraient être vaincus par le siècle, puisque le siècle n’aurait sur eux aucune prise. Dégagés de toute entrave, ils suivraient Jésus-Christ, comme les apôtres et les premiers fidèles, comme tant d’autres, qui, après avoir quitté leurs parents et leurs possessions, s’attachèrent au Christ par des liens indissolubles.

11.

The truth, brethren, must not be disguised; nor must the matter and cause of our wound be concealed. A blind love of one's own property has deceived many; nor could they be prepared for, or at ease in, departing when their wealth fettered them like a chain. Those were the chains to them that remained--those were the bonds by which both virtue was retarded, and faith burdened, and the spirit bound, and the soul hindered; so that they who were involved in earthly things ¹ might become a booty and food for the serpent, which, according to God's sentence, feeds upon earth. And therefore the Lord the teacher of good things, forewarning for the future time, says, "If thou wilt be perfect, go, sell all that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me." ² If rich men did this, they would not perish by their riches; if they laid up treasure in heaven, they would not now have a domestic enemy and assailant. Heart and mind and feeling would be in heaven, if the treasure were in heaven; nor could he be overcome by the world who had nothing in the world whereby he could be overcome. ³ He would follow the Lord loosed and free, as did the apostles, and many in the times of the apostles, and many who forsook both their means and their relatives, and clave to Christ with undivided ties.
