17.
Let no one cheat himself, let no one deceive himself. The Lord alone can have mercy. He alone can bestow pardon for sins which have been committed against Himself, who bare our sins, who sorrowed for us, whom God delivered up for our sins. Man cannot be greater than God, nor can a servant remit or forego by his indulgence what has been committed by a greater crime against the Lord, lest to the person lapsed this be moreover added to his sin, if he be ignorant that it is declared, "Cursed is the man that putteth his hope in man." 1 The Lord must be besought. The Lord must be appeased by our atonement, who has said, that him that denieth Him He will deny, who alone has received all judgment from His Father. We believe, indeed, that the merits of martyrs and the works of the righteous are of great avail with the Judge; but that will be when the day of judgment shall come; 2 when, after the conclusion of this life and the world, His people shall stand before the tribunal of Christ.

11° Que personne ne se fasse illusion : Dieu seul peut faire grâce au pécheur. Celui-qui a porté le fardeau de nos iniquités, qui a souffert pour nous, qui s’est livré à la mort pour expier nos crimes est le seul qui puisse pardonner les fautes commises contre lui. L’homme ne peut pas être supérieur à Dieu; l’esclave ne peut pas accorder la rémission d’une faute qui s’adresse à son maître. Que le pécheur, en se berçant d’une telle espérance, prenne donc garde de devenir plus coupable; car il est écrit : Maudit soit l’homme qui place son espérance dans l’homme (Jér., XVII.). C’est Dieu qu’il faut prier; c’est Dieu qu’il faut désarmer par nos oeuvres satisfactoires : Dieu ‘qui est le juge suprême et, qui reniera ceux qui le renient.
Nous croyons, à la vérité, que les mérites des martyrs et les oeuvres des justes peuvent beaucoup auprès du souverain juge; mais ce ne sera que pour le jour du jugement, lorsque, à la fin du monde, les chrétiens comparaîtront devant le (79) tribunal du Christ.
