XV.

Or, la volonté de Dieu est celle que le Christ, nous a manifestée en l’accomplissant : l’humilité dans notre conduite, la fermeté dans notre foi, le respect dans nos paroles, la justice dans nos actes, la charité dans nos oeuvres, la sévérité dans nos moeurs. Dieu veut que nous ne fassions aucune injure au prochain, que nous supportions celles qui nous sont faites, que nous soyons en paix avec nos frères, que nous l’aimions de tout notre coeur, chérissant en lui le père et craignant le Dieu. Il veut que nous ne préférions rien au Christ, qui, n’a lui-même rien préféré à nous; que nous soyons inséparablement unis à sa charité, fermement attachés à sa croix. Il veut, quand il s’agit de l’honneur et de la gloire du nom chrétien, qu’il y ait en nous cette constance qui confesse la vérité, (209) cette fermeté qui soutient la lutte, cette patience qui, par la mort, mérite la couronne. C’est ainsi qu’on devient cohéritier de Jésus-Christ; c’est ainsi qu’on exécute ses ordres et qu’on accomplit la volonté du Père.

On the Lord's Prayer

15.

Now that is the will of God which Christ both did and taught. Humility in conversation; stedfastness in faith; modesty in words; justice in deeds; mercifulness in works; discipline in morals; to be unable to do a wrong, and to be able to bear a wrong when done; to keep peace with the brethren; to love God with all one's heart; to love Him in that He is a Father; to fear Him in that He is God; to prefer nothing whatever to Christ, because He did not prefer anything to us; to adhere inseparably to His love; to stand by His cross bravely and faithfully; when there is any contest on behalf of His name and honour, to exhibit in discourse that constancy wherewith we make confession; in torture, that confidence wherewith we do battle; in death, that patience whereby we are crowned;--this is to desire to be fellow-heirs with Christ; this is to do the commandment of God; this is to fulfil the will of the Father.
