XXXII.
Quand nous voulons prier, n’approchons pas de Dieu les mains vides : la prière reste sans effet quand elle n’est pas accompagnée par les bonnes oeuvres. Tout arbre stérile est coupé et jeté au feu; de même des paroles non fécondées par les oeuvres ne peuvent nous mériter la grâce divine. C’est ce que. nous enseigne l’Écriture : La prière accompagnée du jeûne et. de l’aumône est agréable à Dieu (Tob., XII). Au dernier jour, le souverain Juge récompensera les bonnes oeuvres et les aumônes; aujourd’hui, de même, il écoute favorablement ceux qui se présentent à lui les mains pleines d’actes méritoires. C’est ainsi que le centurion Corneille mérita d’être exaucé : il distribuait beaucoup d’aumônes au peuple; il priait Dieu constamment; aussi, vers la neuvième heure, pendant sa prière, l’ange du Seigneur lui apparut pour rendre témoignage à ses œuvres : Corneille, lui dit-il, tes prières et tes aumônes sont montées jusqu’à Dieu et il en conserve le souvenir (Act., X.).

On the Lord's Prayer
32.
Moreover, those who pray should not come to God with fruitless or naked prayers. Petition is ineffectual when it is a barren entreaty that beseeches God. 1 For as every tree that bringeth not forth fruit is cut down and cast into the fire; assuredly also, words that do not bear fruit cannot deserve anything of God, because they are fruitful in no result. And thus Holy Scripture instructs us, saying, "Prayer is good with fasting and almsgiving." 2 For He who will give us in the day of judgment a reward for our labours and alms, is even in this life a merciful hearer of one who comes to Him in prayer associated with good works. Thus, for instance, Cornelius the centurion, when he prayed, had a claim to be heard. For he was in the habit of doing many alms-deeds towards the people, and of ever praying to God. To this man, when he prayed about the ninth hour, appeared an angel bearing testimony to his labours, and saying, "Cornelius, thy prayers and thine alms are gone up in remembrance before God." 3
