Mögen sie, wie ihr wollt, Eins seyn; in keiner göttlichen Kraft und Majestät unterschieden; ob ihr uns wohl deßhalb mit ungerechtem Haß verfolget? Was, bei Erwähnung unseres Namens schaudert ihr wie beim übelsten Zeichen; obschon den von euch verehrten Gott auch wir verehren? oder wie behauptet ihr in ebenderselben Sache, den Göttern vertraulicher zu seyn, uns dagegen feindselig und angreifend? Denn ist uns und euch eine Religion gemeinschaftlich, so beruht der Himmlischen Zorn. Wofern sie aber uns allein feindlich sind, so ist offenbar, daß ihr wie sie Gott nicht erkennt; und daß Jupiter dieser nicht sey, geht deutlich aus dem Unwillen der Götter selbst hervor.

35.

But suppose they be one, as you wish, and not different in any power of deity and in majesty, do you therefore persecute us with undeserved hatred? Why do you shudder at the mention of our name as of the worst omen, if we too worship the deity whom you worship? or why do you contend that the gods are friendly to you, but inimical, aye, most hostile to us, though our relations to them are the same? For if one religion is common to us and to you, the anger of the gods is stayed; ¹ but if they are hostile to us alone it is plain that both you and they have no knowledge of God. And that that God is not Jove, is evident by the very wrath of the deities.
