XIII.
A l'égard de là chasteté, l'Ecriture nous apprend non seulement à ne point pécher par action, mais à éviter même toute mauvaise pensée, de sorte que notre coeur reste toujours pur, et que nos yeux ne s'arrêtent point sur la femme d'autrui.
Voici comment s'exprime Salomon, tout à là fois roi et prophète :
"Que tes yeux, dit-il, voient le bien, et que tes paupières ne consentent pas au mal ; prépare un sentier droit à tes pas."
Puis se fait entendre la voix évangélique qui recommande si expressément cette vertu :
"Quiconque aura regardé une femme pour la convoiter, a déjà commis l'adultère dans son coeur. Quiconque renverra sa femme, si ce n'est pour cause d'adultère, la rendra adultère ; et celui qui épousera la femme renvoyée commet un adultère."
Salomon dit encore :
"Qui cachera du feu dans son sein sans voir ses vêtements brûlés ? Qui marchera sur des charbons ardents sans consumer ses pieds ? Il en est ainsi de celui qui s'approche de la femme de son prochain ; celui qui la touchera ne restera pas impuni."

Chapter XIII.--Of Chastity.
And concerning chastity, the holy word teaches us not only not to sin in act, but not even in thought, not even in the heart to think of any evil, nor look on another man's wife with our eyes to lust after her. Solomon, accordingly, who was a king and a prophet, said: "Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee: make straight paths for your feet." 1 And the voice of the Gospel teaches still more urgently concerning chastity, saying: "Whosoever looketh on a woman who is not his own wife, to lust after her, hath committed adultery with her already in his heart." 2 "And he that marrieth," says [the Gospel], "her that is divorced from her husband, committeth adultery; and whosoever putteth away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery." 3 Because Solomon says: "Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned? Or can one walk upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned? So he that goeth in to a married woman shall not be innocent." 4
