20. Speis und Trank soll man nicht für etwas Schlechtes halten, sondern sie mit Mäßigkeit und Dank genießen.

In Betreff der Speisen spricht der Herr zu dir: „Esset die Güter der Erde;¹ alles Fleisch esset wie Gartengemüse,² das Blut aber schütte aus;”³denn „nicht, was in den Mund eingeht, verunreinigt den Menschen, sondern was herauskommt”: ich nenne nur Blasphemie,⁴ Verleumdung und dergleichen. Du aber iß das Mark der Erde⁵ in Gerechtigkeit; „denn alles Gute und Schöne ist sein; Speise den Jünglingen und wohlschmeckender Wein den Jungfrauen.”⁶ Denn „wer ißt oder wer trinkt ohne ihn?”⁷ Darum ermahnet dich auch der weise Esdras mit den Worten: „Gehet hin, esset das Fette und trinket das Süße und seid nicht traurig.”⁸

XX. That We Ought Not to Despise Any of the Sorts of Food that are Set Before Us, But Gratefully and Orderly to Partake of Them.

Now concerning the several sorts of food, the Lord says to thee, "Ye shall eat the good things of the earth;"¹ and, "All sorts of flesh shall ye eat, as the green herb;"² but, "Thou shalt pour out the blood."³ For "not those things that go into the mouth, but those that come out of it, defile a man;"⁴ I mean blasphemies, evil-speaking, and if there be any other thing of the like nature.⁵ But "do thou eat the fat of the land with righteousness."⁶ For "if there be anything pleasant, it is His; and if there be anything good, it is His. Wheat for the young men, and wine to cheer the maids." For "who shall eat or who shall drink without Him?"⁷ Wise Ezra⁸ does also admonish thee and say: "Go your way, and eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and be not sorrowful."⁹
