Chapitre LXXI

Lorsqu’il s’en retourna et que je l’accompagnais, étant arrivé à la porte de la ville, une femme commença à crier derrière nous : Arrêtez-vous, homme de Dieu, ma fille est cruellement tourmentée par le démon. Arrêtez-vous, je vous en supplie, afin que je ne sois pas en danger à courir après vous. Le vieillard, entendant ces paroles et alors que nous l’en prions, s’arrêta très volontiers. Cette femme s’approcha avec son enfant qui se roulait contre terre. Antoine se mit en prière et invoqua le nom de Jésus-Christ, et la fille fut entièrement délivrée par la sortie de l’esprit malin et se remit sur ses pieds. La mère bénit Dieu : nous lui rendîmes tous des actions de grâce ; et lui s’en retourna avec joie sur la montagne, comme si c’eût été sa véritable maison.

But when he was departing, and we were setting him forth on his way, as we ¹ arrived at the gate a woman from behind cried out, ‘Stay, thou man of God, my daughter is grievously vexed by a devil. Stay, I beseech thee, lest I too harm myself with running.’ And the old man when he heard her, and was asked by us, willingly stayed. And when the woman drew near, the child was cast on the ground. But when Antony had prayed and called upon the name of Christ, the child was raised whole, for the unclean spirit was gone forth. And the mother blessed God, and all gave thanks. And Antony himself also rejoiced, departing to the mountain as though it were to his own home.
