70.

All the people, therefore, rejoiced when they heard the anti-Christian heresy anathematised by such a man. And all the people in the city ran together to see Antony; and the Greeks and those who are called their Priests, P. 215 came into the church, saying, ‘We ask to see the man of God,’ for so they all called him. For in that place also the Lord cleansed many of demons, and healed those who were mad. And many Greeks asked that they might even but touch the old man, believing that they should be profited. Assuredly as many became Christians in those few days as one would have seen made in a year. Then when some thought that he was troubled by the crowds, and on this account turned them all away from him, he said, undisturbedly, that there were not more of them than of the demons with whom he wrestled in the mountain.

Chapitre LXX

Tous les peuples se réjouissaient de ce qu’un si grand personnage prononçait des anathèmes contre cette hérésie qui combat formellement Jésus-Christ. Tous les habitants de la ville courraient voir Antoine. Les Païens eux-mêmes et leurs prêtres allaient à l’Eglise, en disant : nous voulons voir l’homme de Dieu. Car tous généralement le nommaient ainsi ; parce que le Seigneur délivra alors en ce lieu, par ses prières, plusieurs possédés et rendit la santé de l’esprit à diverses personnes qui l’avaient perdue. Plusieurs aussi d’entre ces païens désiraient au moins toucher le saint vieillard, croyant que cela leur serait utile. Et pendant le peu de jours où il demeura là, il se converti plus d’infidèles au christianisme qu’il ne s’en était converti en toute une année auparavant. Quelques-uns estimaient que cette grande multitude qui le pressait ne pouvait que l’importuner et voulaient la faire se retirer. Il leur dit avec un visage tranquille : ils ne sont pas en plus grand nombre que les démons que nous avons à combattre sur la montagne.
