Chapter I .--The Discovery of Truth is Difficult, But God Has Promised that He Who Seeks Shall Find.

1. My heart, O Lord, affected by the words of Thy Holy Scripture, is much busied in this poverty of my life; and therefore, for the most part, is the want of human intelligence copious in language, because inquiry speaks more than discovery, and because demanding is longer than obtaining, and the hand that knocks is more active than the hand that receives. We hold the promise; who shall break it? "If God be for us, who can be against us?" ¹ "Ask, and ye shall have; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: for every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened." ² These are Thine own promises; and who need fear to be deceived where the Truth promiseth?

CHAPITRE PREMIER. LA RECHERCHE DE LA VÉRITÉ EST PÉNIBLE.

1. Sollicité, sous les haillons de cette vie, par les paroles de votre sainte Ecriture, mon coeur, ô Dieu ! est en proie aux plus vives perplexités. Et de là ce luxe indigent de langage qu’étale d’ordinaire l’intelligence humaine; car la recherche de la vérité coûte plus de paroles que sa découverte, la demande d’une grâce plus de temps que le succès; et la porte est plus dure à frapper que l’aumône à recevoir. Mais nous avons votre promesse; qui pourrait la détruire? « Si Dieu est pour nous, qui sera contre nous?(Rom. VIII, 31) Demandez, et vous recevrez; cherchez, et vous trouverez ; frappez, et il vous sera ouvert : car qui demande, reçoit; qui cherche, trouve, et on ouvre à qui frappe (Matth. VII, 7-8).» Telles sont vos promesses; et qui craindra d’être trompé, quand la Vérité même s’engage?
