A. J'aperçois cette marche aussi manifeste que rapide. — L. R. Sois donc attentif, afin de :pouvoir répondre à mes interrogations avec exactitude et fermeté. — A. Me voici. — L. R. Si ce monde doit toujours durer, n'est-il pas vrai que le monde durera toujours? — A. Qui peut en douter? — L. R. Et s'il ne doit pas toujours durer, n'est-il pas également vrai qu'il ne durera pas toujours ? — A. Je l'accorde. — L. R. Et s'il doit périr, ne sera-t-il pas vrai, après sa ruine, que le monde a péri? Car il continue à exister tant qu'il n'est pas vrai qu'il ait cessé d'exister. Il répugne donc qu'il ait fini, et qu'il ne soit pas vrai qu'il ait fini ? — A. Je l'accorde aussi. — L. R. Ensuite, te semble-t-il possible qu'il existe quelque chose de vrai si la vérité n'existe pas? -— A. Je ne le crois pas possible. — L. R. Ainsi la vérité subsistera lors même que le monde viendrait à périr ? — A. Je ne puis le nier. — L. R. Et si la vérité même venait à cesser d'être, ne serait-il pas vrai que la vérité a cessé d'être ? — A. Qui peut le nier ? — L. R. Mais rien ne saurait être vrai si la vérité n'existe. — A. Je viens de l'accorder. — L. R. La vérité ne pourra donc jamais cesser d'être? — A. Continue comme tu as commencé, car il n'y a rien de plus vrai que cette conséquence.

A. I see a very plain and compendious order. R. Let this then be the order, that you answer my questions cautiously and firmly. A. I attend. R. If this world shall always abide, it is true that this world is always to abide? A. Who doubts that? R. What if it shall not abide? is it not then true that the world is not to abide? A. I dispute it not. R. How, when it shall have perished, if it is to perish, will it not then be true, that the world has perished? For as long as it is not true that the world has come to an end, it has not come to an end: it is therefore self-contradictory, that the world is ended and that it is not true that the world is ended. A. This too I grant. R. Furthermore, does it seem to you that anything can be true, and not be Truth? A. In no wise. R. There will therefore be Truth, even though the frame of things should pass away. A. I cannot deny it. R. What if Truth herself should perish? will it not be true that Truth has perished? A. And even that who can deny? R. But that which is true cannot be, if Truth is not. A. I have just conceded this. R. In no wise therefore can Truth fail. A. Proceed as thou hast begun, for than this deduction nothing is truer.
