CHAPITRE XVIII.

DE L’HOMME PARFAIT, C’EST-à-DIRE DE JÉSUS-CHRIST, ET DE SON CORPS, C’EST-A-DIRE DE L’ÉGLISE, QUI EN EST LA PLÉNITUDE.

Pour comprendre ce que dit l’Apôtre, que nous parviendrons tous à l’état d’homme parfait, il faut examiner avec attention toute la suite de sa pensée. Il s’exprime ainsi: « Celui qui est descendu est celui-là même qui est monté au-dessus de tous les cieux, afin de consommer toutes choses. Lui-même en a établi quelques-uns apôtres, d’autres prophètes, ceux-ci évangélistes, ceux-là pasteurs et docteurs, pour la consommation des saints, l’oeuvre du ministère et l’édifice du corps de Jésus-Christ, jusqu’à ce que nous parvenions tous à l’unité d’une même foi, à la connaissance du Fils de Dieu, à l’état d’homme parfait et à la mesure de la plénitude de l’âge de Jésus-Christ, afin que nous ne soyons plus comme des enfants, nous laissant aller à tout vent de doctrine et aux illusions des hommes fourbes qui veulent nous engager dans l’erreur, mais que, pratiquant la vérité parla charité, nous croissions en toutes choses dans Jésus-Christ, qui est la tête. d’où tout le corps bien lié et bien disposé reçoit, selon la mesure et la force de chaque partie, le développement nécessaire pour s’édifier soi-même dans la charité¹ ». Voilà quel est l’homme parfait: la tête d’abord, puis le corps composé de tous les membres, qui recevront la dernière perfection en leur temps. Chaque jour cependant, de nouveaux éléments se joignent à ce corps, tandis que s’édifie l’Eglise à qui l’on dit: « Vous êtes le corps de Jésus-Christ et ses membres² » ; et ailleurs: « Pour son corps qui est l’Eglise³ » ; et encore: « Nous ne sommes- tous ensemble qu’un seul pain et qu’un seul corps⁴ ». C’est de l’édifice de ce corps qu’il est dit ici: « Pour la consommation des saints, pour l’oeuvre du ministère et l’édifice du corps de Jésus-Christ ». Puis l’Apôtre ajoute ce passage dont il est question: « Jusqu’à ce que nous parvenions tous à « l’unité d’une même foi, à la connaissance du Fils de Dieu, à l’état d’homme parfait et à la mesure de la plénitude de l’âge de Jésus-Christ »; et le reste, montrant enfin de quel corps on doit entendre cette mesure par ces paroles; « Afin que nous croissions en toutes tout le corps bien lié et bien disposé reçoit, selon la mesure et la force de chaque partie, le développement qui lui convient». Comme il y a une mesure de chaque partie, il y en a aussi une de tout le corps, composé de toutes ces parties; et c’est la mesure de la plénitude dont il est dit: « A la mesure de la plénitude de l’âge de Jésus-Christ». L’Apôtre fait encore mention de cette plénitude, lorsque, parlant de Jésus-Christ, il dit ; « Il l’a établi pour être le chef de toute I’Eglise, qui est son corps et sa plénitude, lui qui consomme tout en tous⁵ ».Mais, lors même qu’il faudrait entendre le passage dont il s’agit de la résurrection, qui nous empêcherait d’appliquer aussi à la femme ce qu’il dit de l’homme, en prenant l’homme pour tous les deux, comme dans ce verset du Psaume: « Bienheureux l’homme qui craint le Seigneur⁶ ! » Car assurément les femmes qui craignent le Seigneur sont comprises dans la pensée du Psalmiste.

Chapter 18.--Of the Perfect Man, that Is, Christ; And of His Body, that Is, The Church, Which is His Fullness.

To understand what the apostle means when he says that we shall all come to a perfect man, we must consider the connection of the whole passage, which runs thus: "He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that He might fill all things. And He gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: till we all come to the unity of the faith and knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the age of the fullness of Christ: that we henceforth be no more children, tossed and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in Him in all things, which is the Head, even Christ: from whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body, unto the edifying of itself in love." ¹ Behold what the perfect man is--the head and the body, which is made up of all the members, which in their own time shall be perfected. But new additions are daily being made to this body while the Church is being built up, to which it is said, "Ye are the body of Christ and His members;" ² and again, "For His body's sake," he says, "which is the Church;" ³ and again, "We being many are one head, one body." ⁴ It is of the edification of this body that it is here, too, said, "For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edification of the body of Christ;" and then that passage of which we are now speaking is added, "Till we all come to the unity of the faith and knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the age of the fullness of Christ," and so on. And he shows of what body we are to understand this to be the measure, when he says, "That we may grow up into Him in all things, which is the Head, even Christ: from whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part." As, therefore, there is a measure of every part, so there is a measure of the fullness of the whole body which is made up of all its parts, and it is of this measure it is said, "To the measure of the age of the fullness of Christ." This fullness he spoke of also in the place where he says of Christ, "And gave Him to be the Head over all things to the Church, ⁵ which is His body, the fullness of Him that filleth all in all." ⁶ But even if this should be referred to the form in which each one shall rise, what should hinder us from applying to the woman what is expressly said of the man, understanding both sexes to be included under the general term "man?" For certainly in the saying, "Blessed is he who feareth the Lord," ⁷ women also who fear the Lord are included.
