CHAPITRE XXII. HONTEUSE FORME DONNÉE A LA TERRE DE LUMIÈRE.

S'il en est ainsi, il nous semble que la terre de ténèbres adhère de deux côtés à la terre de lumière; en d'autres termes, qu'elle la touche et qu'elle est touchée par elle de deux côtés. L'auteur pouvait donc dire en toute certitude que d'un côté était la terre de ténèbres.

24. Mais quelle triste forme donnée à la terre de lumière ! Figurez-vous un ongle fendu par un coin noir se rétrécissant dans sa partie inférieure; infinie sur tous les autres points, elle n'est limitée que dans la partie inférieure où vient adhérer la surface de la terre de ténèbres. Quant à cette dernière, sa forme résulte clairement de ce qui précède ; celle-ci fend, l'autre est fendue; l'une est insérée, l'autre s'entr'ouvre ; l'une ne se termine nulle part, l'autre n'a de limites que dans sa partie inférieure, là où elle subit l'adjonction du coin ennemi. Ainsi ces ignorants et ces avares; qui attachent plus d'importance à la multitude des parties qu'à l'unité, jusqu'au point de constituer la terre de lumière de six parties diverses, trois tournées vers le bas et trois tournées vers le haut, ont préféré pour la terre de lumière, la honte d'être déchirée, à la gloire de déchirer elle-même son ennemie. Qu'ils soutiennent, en effet, que cette figure ne suppose aucun mélange, j'y consens, mais ils ne nieront pas qu'il y ait pénétration et déchirement.

Chapter 22.--The Form of the Region of Light the Worse of the Two.

Well, then, if this is so, the region of darkness is clearly touched on two sides by the region of light. And if it is touched on two sides, it must touch on two. So much for its being on one side, as we were told before.

24.And what an unseemly appearance is this of the region of light!--like a cloven arch, with a black wedge inserted below, bounded only in the direction of the cleft, and having a void space interposed where the boundless emptiness stretches above the region of darkness. Indeed, the form of the region of darkness is better than that of the region of light: for the former cleaves, the latter is cloven; the former fills the gap which is made in the latter; the former has no void in it, while the latter is undefined in all directions, except that where it is filled up by the wedge of darkness. In an ignorant and greedy notion of giving more honor to a number of pans than to a single one, so that the region of light should have six, three upwards and three downwards, they have made this region be split up, instead of sundering the other. For, according to this figure, though there may be no commixture of darkness with light, there is certainly penetration.
