CHAPITRE PREMIER. OBSERVANCES ET PROMESSES TEMPORELLES DANS L'ANCIEN TESTAMENT.

Fauste. Admettez-vous l'Ancien Testament? — Oui s'il m'assure un héritage ; autrement, je le rejette. C'est une dérision par trop grande de vouloir user d'un testament qui vous laisse déshérité. Ignorez-vous que l'Ancien Testament promet la terre de Chanaan[^1] ; qu'il ne la promet qu'aux Juifs, c'est-à-dire à ceux qui sont circoncis, qui offrent des sacrifices, qui s'abstiennent de la chair de porc et de toutes les viandes que Moïse désigne comme impures, qui observent le sabbat, la solennité des azymes, et toutes les autres prescriptions de ce genre, que l'auteur de ce Testament leur a ordonné d'observer[^2]? Comme toutes ces pratiques ne sont nullement du goût des chrétiens, puisqu'il n'en est pas un seul d'entre nous pour s'y soumettre, il est juste que refusant l'héritage, nous en rendions aussi le titre. Telle est la première raison qui me détermine à rejeter l'Ancien Testament; à moins que vous n'ayez quelque avis plus sage à me donner. La seconde raison, c'est que l'héritage qu'il annonce est si chétif, si matériel, et si loin de répondre aux besoins de notre âme, qu'après l'heureuse promesse du Nouveau Testament, qui m'assure le royaume des cieux et la vie éternelle, il ne m'inspirerait que le dédain, lors même qu'il me serait offert sans condition.

Faustus said: Do I believe the Old Testament? If it bequeaths anything to me, I believe it; if not, I reject it. It would be an excess of forwardness to take the documents of others which pronounce me disinherited. Remember that the promise of Canaan in the Old Testament is made to Jews, that is, to the circumcised, who offer sacrifice, and abstain from swine's flesh, and from the other animals which Moses pronounces unclean, and observe Sabbaths, and the feast of unleavened bread, and other things of the same kind which the author of the Testament enjoined. Christians have not adopted these observances, and no one keeps them; so that if we will not take the inheritance, we should surrender the documents. This is my first reason for rejecting the Old Testament, unless you teach me better. My second reason is, that this inheritance is such a poor fleshly thing, without any spiritual blessings, that after the New Testament, and its glorious promise of the kingdom of heaven and eternal life, I think it not worth the taking.
