CHAPITRE XC. SENS SYMBOLIQUE DU MEURTRE DE L'ÉGYPTIEN PAR MOÏSE.

Moïse, défendant un frère et tuant un égyptien, c'est évidemment la figure du Christ Notre-Seigneur prenant notre défense et mettant à mort le démon, acharné à nous nuire pendant ce pèlerinage. Si Moïse ensevelit dans le sable l'homme qu'il a tué[^1], il est clair qu'il a vu d'avance le cadavre caché chez ceux qui ne sont point établis sur un fondement solide. Aussi, le Seigneur fonde-t-il son Eglise sur la pierre, et il compare ceux qui écoutent sa parole et la mettent en pratique à un homme prudent qui bâtit sa maison sur la pierre, pour qu'elle ne cède pas aux tentations et ne tombe pas en ruine; et ceux qui l'écoutent et ne la mettent pas en pratique, il les compare à un insensé qui bâtit sur le sable, et dont la maison, éprouvée par les tentations, devient une grande ruine.

Moses killing the Egyptian in defending one of his brethren reminds us naturally of the destruction of the devil, our assailant in this land of strangers, by our defender the Lord Christ. And as Moses hid the dead body in the sand, even so the devil, though slain, remains concealed in those who are not firmly settled. The Lord, we know, builds the Church on a rock; and those who hear His word and do it, He compares to a wise man who builds his house upon a rock, and who does not yield or give way before temptation; and those who hear and do not, He compares to a foolish man who builds on the sand, and when his house is tried its ruin is great. ¹
