CHAPITRE XCI. CE QUE SIGNIFIENT LES DÉPOUILLES DES ÉGYPTIENS.

Moïse dépouille les Egyptiens par l'ordre du Seigneur son Dieu[^2], qui ne commande jamais rien qu'avec la plus parfaite équité. Je me rappelle avoir exposé, autant que je l'ai pu, le sens de cette figure, dans certains livres que j'ai écrits sur la doctrine chrétienne[^3]: à savoir que l'or, l'argent et les vêtements des Egyptiens signifiaient certaines doctrines qu'il n'est pas sans profit d'étudier dans les rites mêmes des Gentils. Mais que ce soit là la vraie signification, ou que cela veuille dire que les âmes précieuses, choisies parmi les Gentils, comme des vases d'or et d'argent, avec leurs corps, indiqués par les vêtements, se joignent au peuple de Dieu, pour être délivrées de ce siècle comme d'une autre Egypte que ce soit, dis-je, l'un ou l'autre de ces sens, ou peut-être un autre encore, il est certain, pour ceux qui lisent ces Ecritures avec piété, que ce n'est point au hasard et dans un but prophétique que tout cela a été commandé, exécuté, écrit.

Of the prophetic significance of the spoiling of the Egyptians, which was done by Moses at the command of the Lord his God, who commands nothing but what is most just, I remember to have set down what occurred to me at the time in my book entitled On Christian Doctrine; ¹ to the effect that the gold and silver and garments of the Egyptians typified certain branches of learning which may be profitably learned or taught among the Gentiles. This may be the true explanation; or we may suppose that the vessels of gold and silver represent the precious souls, and the garments the bodies, of those from among the Gentiles who join themselves to the people of God, that along with them they may be freed from the Egypt of this world. Whatever the true interpretation may be, the pious student of the Scriptures will feel certain that in the command, in the action, and in the narrative there is a purpose and a symbolic meaning.
