CHAPITRE PREMIER. LA PIÈCE DE DRAP NEUF ET LE VIEIL HABIT.

Fauste. Pourquoi n'admettez-vous pas l'Ancien Testament ? — Parce que j'ai été prévenu par le Nouveau : et entre l'Ancien et le Nouveau il n'y a pas de liaison, comme l'atteste l'Écriture. Car, dit-elle, « personne ne met une pièce de drap neuf à un vieil habit, autrement on le déchirera davantage[^1] ». Pour éviter de produire, comme vous le faites, une plus grande scission, je ne mêle point la nouveauté chrétienne à la vétusté hébraïque. Qui ne trouverait honteux, après avoir revêtu des habits neufs, de ne pas laisser les vieux au rebut ? Aussi, quand même je serais né juif, comme les apôtres, il eût été honorable pour moi, en acceptant le Nouveau Testament, de répudier l'Ancien, comme ils l'ont fait eux-mêmes. Mais ayant reçu de la nature l'insigne bienfait de ne pas naître sous le joug de la servitude, et voyant venir à moi tout d'abord, le Christ avec le don d'une liberté parfaite, ne serais-je point malheureux, insensé et ingrat, de me vouer à l'esclavage ? Paul reproche aux Galates, revenant à la circoncision, de retourner à des observances légales si défectueuses et si impuissantes, auxquelles ils voulaient de nouveau s'assujétir[^2] : puis-je admettre ce que je vois condamner dans un autre ? S'il est honteux de rentrer en servitude, il l'est davantage de s'y soumettre pour la première fois.

Faustus said: Another reason for not receiving the Old Testament is, that I am provided with the New; and Scripture says that old and new do not agree. For "no one putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, otherwise the rent is made worse." ¹ To avoid making a worse rent, as you have done, I do not mix Christian newness with Hebrew oldness. Every one accounts it mean, when a man has got a new dress, not to give the old one to his inferiors. So, even if I were a Jew by birth, as the apostles were, it would be proper for me, on receiving the New Testament, to discard the Old, as the apostles did. And having the advantage of being born free from the yoke of bondage, and being early introduced into the full liberty of Christ, what a foolish and ungrateful wretch I should be to put myself again under the yoke! This is what Paul blames the Galatians for; because, going back to circumcision, they turned again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto they desired again to be in bondage. ² Why should I do what I see another blamed for doing? My going into bondage would be worse than their returning to it.
