CHAPITRE XXXII. ÉPOQUE DES JUGES ET DES ROIS. SAMSON, JAHEL, LA TOISON DE GÉDEON.

Qu'il voie les époques, d'abord des Juges, puis des Rois ; comme il y aura jugement d'abord, ensuite royaume ; puis dans ces mêmes époques des Juges et des Rois, qu'il voie le Christ et l'Église figurés en raille et mille manières. Qui donc, dans la personne de Samson, tue un lion qu'il rencontre en allant demander une femme chez des étrangers[^3]? sinon celui qui, devant appeler l'Église du sein des nations, a dit: « Réjouissez-vous, car j'ai vaincu le monde[^4] ? » Que signifie ce rayon de miel formé dans la gueule de ce même lion tué[^5]? si ce n'est ce que nous avons déjà sous les yeux : les lois mêmes du royaume terrestre, qui ci-devant frémissaient contre le Christ, maintenant détruites dans leur cruauté et prêtant appui à la douceur évangélique qui doit être prêchée ? Qu'est-ce que cette femme qui perce d'un clou les tempes de l'ennemi[^6], sinon la foi de l'Église qui détruit l'empire du démon par la croix du Christ? Que signifie cette toison mouillée de rosée quand l'aire reste sèche, puis restant sèche quand l'aire est mouillée[^7]? si ce n'est la race des Hébreux, qui d'abord, seule, possède dans les saints le mystère de Dieu, qui est le Christ, tandis que le reste du monde en est privé ; puis, qui en est privée à son tour, quand il est manifesté aujourd'hui au monde entier?

He will see the times of the judges precede those of the kings, as the judgment will precede the kingdom. And under both the judges and the kings he will see Christ and the Church repeatedly prefigured in many and various ways. Who was in Samson, when he killed the lion that met him as he went to get a wife among strangers, but He who, when going to call His Church from among the Gentiles, said, "Be of good cheer, I have overcome the world?" ¹ What means the hive in the mouth of the slain lion, but that, as we see, the very laws of the earthly kingdom which once raged against Christ have now lost their fierceness, and have become a protection for the preaching of gospel sweetness? What is that woman boldly piercing the temples of the enemy with a wooden nail, but the faith of the Church casting down the kingdom of the devil by the cross of Christ? What is the fleece wet while the ground was dry, and again the fleece dry while the ground was wet, but the Hebrew nation at first possessing alone in its typical institution Christ the mystery of God, while the whole world was in ignorance? And now the whole world has this mystery revealed, while the Jews are destitute of it.
