6.

Looking at the flesh itself, do we not see in the construction of its vital parts, in the symmetry of form, in the position and arrangement of the limbs of action and the organs of sensation, all acting in harmony; do we not see in the adjustment of measures, in the proportion of numbers, in the order of weights, the handiwork of the true God, of whom it is truly said, "Thou hast ordered all things in measure, and number, and weight"? ¹ If your heart was not hardened and corrupted by falsehood, you would understand the invisible things of God from the things which He has made, even in these feeble creatures of flesh. For who is the author of the things I have mentioned, but He whose unity is the standard of all measure, whose wisdom is the model of all beauty, and whose law is the rule of all order? If you are blind to these things, hear at least the words of the apostle.

CHAPITRE VI. L'OUVRIER SUPRÊME DÉMONTRÉ PAR SES OEUVRES.

Quoi ! ces entrailles qui vivent dans la chair, ces formes si bien proportionnées, ces membres destinés à agir, ces organes adaptés pour sentir, tous distincts et en rapport avec la place qu'ils occupent et les fonctions qu'ils exercent, tous disposés dans une harmonie parfaite, réglés dans leurs mesures, égalisés dans leurs nombres, combinés dans leurs poids : quoi ! tout cela n'indique pas le suprême ouvrier, le vrai Dieu, celui dont on a dit avec tant de vérité : « Vous avez réglé toutes choses avec mesure, avec nombre et avec poids[^1] ? » Si votre coeur n'était pas perverti et gâté par de vaines chimères, vous comprendriez et apercevriez ses perfections invisibles par ces êtres créés dans ce monde faible et charnel[^2]. Car de qui tiennent-ils tout ce que je viens de rappeler, sinon de celui dont l'unité détermine toute mesure, dont la sagesse produit toute beauté, dont la volonté établit tout ordre ? Et si vous n'avez pas d'yeux pour voir cela, croyez du moins à la parole de l'Apôtre.
