24.
First of all, then, not only the speech of these men, but their life also, was prophetic; and the whole kingdom of the Hebrews was like a great prophet, corresponding to the greatness of the Person prophesied. So, as regards those Hebrews who were made wise in heart by divine instruction, we may discover a prophecy of the coming of Christ and of the Church, both in what they said and in what they did; and the same is true as regards the divine procedure towards the whole nation as a body. For, as the apostle says, "all these things were our examples."

CHAPITRE XXIV. INDIVIDUS ET NATION, TOUT A ÉTÉ PROPHÉTIE CHEZ LES JUIFS.
Je commence donc par poser en principe que, chez ces hommes, non-seulement le langage, mais la vie même était prophétique ; que tout le royaume des Juifs a été, en quelque sorte, un grand prophète, et le prophète d'un grand personnage. Il faut donc chercher l'annonce du Christ et de l'Eglise, d'une part, dans ce que disaient et faisaient ceux que la sagesse divine avait éclairés; et de l'autre, dans les événements que la divine Providence ménageait dans les individus ou à l'occasion de toute la nation judaïque. Car toutes ces choses, comme dit l'Apôtre, « ont été des figures de ce qui nous arrive[^1] ».
