Reply to Faustus the Manichaean

Faustus said: On one occasion, when addressing a large audience, I was asked by one of the crowd, Do you believe that Jesus was born of Mary? I replied, Which Jesus do you mean? for in the Hebrew it is the name of several people. One was the son of Nun, the follower of Moses; 1 another was the son of Josedech the high priest; 2 again, another is spoken of as the son of David; 3 and another is the Son of God. 4 Of which of these do you ask whether I believe him to have been born of Mary? His answer was, The Son of God, of course. On what evidence, said I, oral or written, am I to believe this? He replied, On the authority of Matthew. What, said I, did Matthew write? He replied, "The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham" (Matt. i. 1). Then said I, I was afraid you were going to say, The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the Son of God; and I was prepared to correct you. Now that you have quoted the verse accurately, you must nevertheless be advised to pay attention to the words. Matthew does not profess to give an account of the generation of the Son of God, but of the son of David.

Faustus sagte: Anlässlich einer Disputation entgegnete mir einmal einer aus der zahlreichen Zuhörerschaft mit folgender Frage: Anerkennst du, dass Jesus Sohn der Maria ist? Ich antwortete ihm: Welchen Jesus meinst du denn? Es gibt ja im Judentum mehrere Jesus: Einer ist der Sohn des Nave, ein Jünger des Moses (cf. Ex. 33,11; eccl. 46,1), ein zweiter ist der Sohn des Hohepriesters Josedech (cf. Esra 5,2; Agg. 1,1); wieder ein anderer ist jener, welcher Sohn Davids genannt wird (cf. Röm. 1,3; Mark. 1,1 ff.; Mt. 1,1 ff.); und noch ein anderer ist der Sohn Gottes. Auf welchen von diesen zielt nun deine Frage, ob ich anerkenne, dass er der Sohn Marias sei? Natürlich auf den Sohn Gottes*, sagte er. Ich darauf: Und auf welchen Schriftsteller oder Lehrer kann ich mich stützen, dass ich das anerkenne? Jener antwortete: Auf Matthaeus. Ich wiederum fragte ihn: Was hat denn Matthaeus geschrieben? Und er darauf: „Buch der Abstammung Jesu Christi, des Sohnes Davids, des Sohnes Abrahams“ usw. Darauf sagte ich: Ich hatte schon geglaubt, dass du sagen würdest: „Buch der Abstammung Jesu Christi, des Sohnes Gottes“*, und hatte mich schon vorbereitet, einen Einwand zu machen; da du nun aber die Stelle wortgetreu zitiert hast, muss ich dich nur mahnen, den zitierten Wortlaut genau anzuschauen. Matthaeus erklärt hier ja nicht, dass er sich vorgenommen habe, die Abstammung des Sohnes Gottes aufzuschreiben, sondern jene des Sohnes Davids.
